Terrific look to this beer. Black as night with a thick mocha head that lasts forever. Very unusual nose....bbq sauce and baked beans dominate the malt. Taste hints with caramel then displays a much to subdued layer of malt. Mouth feel is disapointing as this beer looks and should be much thicker than it actually is. Finish is long and strong and finally showing some signs of oatmeal. I want to know what happened to the body of this beer? It simply doesn’t arrive till the finish!

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled at Wild Rose brewery. pours dark black with only a hint of red. The brew master gave me a L.E.D. flashlight to try to see light through it and I could not unless I held it to the very edge. Has a mocha coloured head that leaves rings all the way down my glass. Aroma has tar, mixed with chocolate, coffee, and smoke. Tastes fairly smokey with dark chocolate, black coffee, oatmeal, and loads of tar on the finish. Really thick, bitter-sweet stout. Great carbonation. Mouth coating goodness. I brought home a party pig of this because it was so good.

UPDATED: JUL 20, 2009 Had on tap in the taproom as well as at the Palomino downtown. Absolutely magnificent. A wonderful beer from Wild Rose. Jet black...creamy tan coloured head. Aroma of malts roasted extra long. Burnt flavours ad hint of oatmeal is present. I would love to drink this beer all the time.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
- served on draft at the location in Calgary.
Opaque... jet black, with a light tan, creamy, and sticky head.
Malt roast, a subtle chocolate... a nice, softer aroma. Some modest notes of whole wheat.
Deep roasted malts, slightly burnt flavours. Some mellow espresso flavours. Chocolate is kept to a minimum on the palate, and oatmeal is also low-key and pleasant.
Creamy, round... dash of carbonation, but barely. Easy going Alcohol, a great session selection - served in true blue 20oz pints, and easy to do a few of them.

Bottle (by hand, I believe? I got it through somewhat mysterious means...). Deep brown-black body with a thin tan head. Roasty aroma with some fresh ground coffee and a very faint tartness. Body is lighter than expected, with fairly low carbonation. Lots of roast in the flavour, with a fairly dry finish. Seems more like a dry stout than a sweet, to be honest, but still OK.
