This beer turns conventional wisdom on its head with five kinds of malt and rolled oats. This oatmeal porter pours pitch black into your glass and yields a thick brown head. You’ll need a knife to cut through this one. An evolution of sorts, our Head Brewer first crafted this beer at home and then commercially in England while in brew school. And now perfection! Full bodied brew with strong chocolate and roasted malt flavor.

Bottle from the Liquor Barn in Redding, CA. I was very impressed with this brew. It’s very hit and miss with some of these smaller brewers. Full bodied, full of chocolate and roasted malt flavor. I can’t wait for my next trip to Redding so I can get another bottle.

chocolate and roast forward. pretty smooth, though a touch thin as well. Bittersweet aftertaste. Not bad.

Thick, malt and oat backbone. Oats make for awesome mouthfeel. Mild hop background. Good coffee hints in the finish. Quite an interesting brew.

On tap @ Miners Alley. Mostly an ashy and roasty beer. There is some earthy hops and a bit of dark fruits. Big time chalk, grass, and burnt sugar. Maybe some sugar and woody hops. Definitely on the acidic side, though. Mild malt, sugar, and fruity sweetness. Meh.

Firkin at Toad in the Hole. Deep brown, bright, with minimal bubbles that disappear altogether. Intense, inviting chocolate aroma wafts away to reveal chunky vanillin, but it tires and gets artificial. Flavor and palate follow similarly unfortunate trajectories, with little beeriness left to stand up to the vanilla extract overtones.

Bomber from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours black with a creamy dark tan head. Aroma of dark malt and maybe chocolate. Full bodied. Flavor is chocolate, gets a bit earthy, moves to dark treacle. Yet there seems to be some hop in it, because it finishes somewhat bitter. Could be malt I suppose. Cause it’s not dryish. Overall it’s a good drink. Liquid bread!

Bottle from Capitol Beer & Tap Room. Pours near black with a thick tan head and a musty treacle aroma. There is a hearty roasted malt and dark molasses flavor with a dry slightly bitter finish.

Bomber from liquor barn. Bottle was way to carbonated for most beer styles & especially a porter. Beer was very one note in flavor with black malts dominating & not much else. Maybe I had an off bottle.

22 oz. bottle. It pours black with a nice creamy tan/brown head. Good retention. The aroma is inviting and rich with milk chocolate, coffee, caramel and cream. Pretty sweet smelling and chocolaty. The flavor is drier and a bit thinner than expected with a lot of dirty black malt character. Ash, coffee, smoke and a mildly acidic finish. Not bad, but it could’ve used a bit more caramel and cocoa in the flavor to add some richness to the palate. Decent.

Tastes a bit hoppy on the tongue, but after that it is a delicious Oatmeal Porter!
