As Will-Bräu Helles. Pours a clear golden color. Grainy malty start, quite light-bodied malty character, with some shy but good hops towards the finish.

Draught at the brewpub. It’a golden with a creamy, white and lasting head. The aroma has notes of grain, malt and flower. The moderately ti light sweet flavour has notes of newly harvested grain, malt, flower, and it’s soft and extremely easy to drink.

Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy medium yellow, moderate density of tiny to medium sized particles. Aroma is moderately malty (light bread), moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs). Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately bitter. Finish is moderately bitter. Medium body, watery (almost creamy) texture, lively carbonation. Very well-made basic German lager...good balance of malt and hops in both aroma and flavor, very clean, non-astringent, non-acidic.

UPDATED: FEB 27, 2007 Light brownish gold in color with a rapidly retreating head, this has a caramel & bread aroma with some grassy, herbal hops. It’s both watery and slightly oily in the mouth. The flavor is sweet caramel with an earthy bitterness that turns tinny in the finish. Not destined to be a favorite.

Straw gold color. Small white foamy head. Aroma is floral and citrusy. A medium bodied helles. Malts are fruity, citrusy and grassy. Hops are mild and a touch floral and spicy. Nicely balanced. Light and refreshing. Crisp and clean. No objectable flavors. Nice helles. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

(500 ml bottle: $1.89 at Hi-Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa, CA) Probably the least sweet imported beer of this style, it’s actually not sweet at all. There isn’t a whole lot of flavor, but the light breadiness is under control, and in the process, only a mild bitterness is necessary to keep this beer balanced. Because this lager isn’t sweet, and the bready malt is light, this light bodied beer is quite clean throughout, and the mild bitterness and slight citrusy tartness keep the palate crisp and fresh. The nose is also mildly bready and not sweet. Medium straw in color, but the beer is very hazy. The small white head settles to a wide ring, and leaves only spots and a few slashes of lace on the glass. Not enough flavor to hook me, but it’s a nicely made lager that is easy to drink, doesn’t pound the tongue with sweetness, and doesn’t leave a bad aftertaste.

Hazy, golden/amber with a small head and light particulate. Aroma is very caramel-heavy right off the bat with grassy hops adding character. Sweet Ovaltine malt in the background amidst light mustiness. Malts appear first in the flavor on top of a spiciness in the palate. It’s a downward spiral from there, however, with middle flavors turning earthen & mineral and a finish that is sour and metallic leaving a phlegmy film on the throat.

Pale yellow body with a fast dissipating head. Aroma is floral with some malt. Body was on the watery side. A decent, basic Helles, nicely balanced. Good cold on a hot day.
