Commercial Description:
"400" Ale commemorates the founding of the first Virginia Settlement and with it, the founding of the American brewing industry. Beer was an essential component of everyday life in Jamestown, only the security and shelter provided by the triangular shaped fort and cultivation of edible (no doubt including barley) crops outranked the production of beer in importance. Fresh water flowing in local streams and the recently excavated well provided a source of potable water, but beer and other "processed liquids, primarily beer" were preferred drinks.
This ale, like the ales of the time, is brown in color. This beer may be more robust than 18th century brews, a liberty we chose to take. How could we possibly do justice to so important an event of 400 years ago, with anything other than a truly robust, full flavored contemporary "Imperial Brown Ale." Cheers

This beer seemed promising. However, I was extremely let down. I was expecting a stronger malty/caramely beer. Instead I got a beer that was pretty tart, less than complex, and finished sticky.

Bottle and served in Duval snifter: Pours a deep brown topped by a small but lasting tan foamy head and good lace. The aroma has notes of fig, anise, pipe tobacco, leather, caramel, smoke, walnut and some lacto vapours. The taste start with an interesting fruity twang, lactic sourness, nutty, cold coffee and a bit charred smoke malts. I am not sure if intended or not but I sort of am digging this weird flavor profile. Additionally I found some mineral water and allspice as well. The mouth feel is soft and as a bit of a bite before the dry finish. Methinks I am against the grain on this but I like the sour and fruity twang interplay with the sweet malts.

Poured a clear deep chestnut color with an off-white head. Lightly tart with notes of caramel, roasted malt, and cola. The flavor was sour with roasted malt and a light bitter finish. Semi-dry finish with a medium bodied.

bottle.....pours a cloudy caramel brown with a thin bubbly milky white head....nose was mostly made up of caramel. fig, and other dark fruits....flavors somewhat threw me off. i was expected more of a sweet caramel malt profile but what i experienced instead was more of a sour dark fruit complexion. not bitter, just sour. low level of carbonation that didn’t add anything to the enjoyment.....totally not what i was expecting.

Poured a dark chestnut color with a small, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of pine, dark fruits, citrus, light roast, wood, and caramel malts. Taste of roast, caramel malts, tobacco, cocoa, light fruits, and unfortunately a mildly sour grape / apple taste. Which means I probably drank this one just a couple months too late. Too bad, this had some promise.

Bomber that bombed. Ever bite into a crab leg and realize that is was spoiled? you know by that taste of ammonia that you had better spit it out or spend the rest of the night tossing your guts into the toilet. Well, I took one taste of this and spit it out and poured the rest into the sink. As someone else has already said, it was very muddled and had no redeeming beer qualities at all.

Bottle courtesy of Immy. Pours brown with a tan head. Smells of cream, caramel, some earthy hints. Tastes of tarte citrus, lactic, semi- sour (is this accidental or intentional? I like it!!!), caramel, lots more tarte sourness. Lots of spicy qualities as the beer warms. This is definitely unique.
