Commercial Description:
"400" Ale commemorates the founding of the first Virginia Settlement and with it, the founding of the American brewing industry. Beer was an essential component of everyday life in Jamestown, only the security and shelter provided by the triangular shaped fort and cultivation of edible (no doubt including barley) crops outranked the production of beer in importance. Fresh water flowing in local streams and the recently excavated well provided a source of potable water, but beer and other "processed liquids, primarily beer" were preferred drinks.
This ale, like the ales of the time, is brown in color. This beer may be more robust than 18th century brews, a liberty we chose to take. How could we possibly do justice to so important an event of 400 years ago, with anything other than a truly robust, full flavored contemporary "Imperial Brown Ale." Cheers

15 DEC 07, Southeast YeHa. (IMPERIAL BROWN ALE) . 22oz bottle Jamestown 1607-2007. Aroma is very nice. Sweet malts, like your kitchen on brewing day. Flavor is not equally pleasing. Lots of bitterness.

Bottle. Yeasty, bitter, funky, and sour. That’s how I’d describe this beer. It had some malty notes and light sweetness, but it was not a good beer.

Pours a cloudy brown color with a soapy head. Aroma of yeast, malt, and fruit. Taste was unique. Malty with some fruit, bread.... Nice offering.

Bottle. Pours dark brown. Aroma is very malty and bready. Taste is muddled, sour and lacking in depth. This claims to be a brown ale, but doesn’t come close.

Bottle; poured a dark brown with a smallish head. Aroma of molasses, dark fruit, roasted malt and raisons. Flavor was dominated by roasted malt with pronounced sour and dark fruits. Decent brew once the strange sour component diminished.

Bomber bottle sampled. Poured light brown with a small beige head. Aroma of dark fruits. Taste is of raisons, figs, other dark fruits, with a hint of roast. Medium body with a nice roast finish. Good imp.brown.

Pretty good brown ale, enjoyed everything about it except for an odd sour bite in the finish, get rid of that and its a nice brew. Had to try it while I could, apparently this one only comes around every 400 years

[729-20071001] 1pt6floz (w/ jerc, Radek Kliber, tupalev). Dark fruit and slightly roasted malt aroma with raisiny light sweet after hints. Hazy, dark red brown body with quick light tan bubbles. Sweet sweet dark figgy fruit malt flavour has roasted raisins. Medium body. Interesting, nice sweet roast.
