Commercial Description:
"400" Ale commemorates the founding of the first Virginia Settlement and with it, the founding of the American brewing industry. Beer was an essential component of everyday life in Jamestown, only the security and shelter provided by the triangular shaped fort and cultivation of edible (no doubt including barley) crops outranked the production of beer in importance. Fresh water flowing in local streams and the recently excavated well provided a source of potable water, but beer and other "processed liquids, primarily beer" were preferred drinks.
This ale, like the ales of the time, is brown in color. This beer may be more robust than 18th century brews, a liberty we chose to take. How could we possibly do justice to so important an event of 400 years ago, with anything other than a truly robust, full flavored contemporary "Imperial Brown Ale." Cheers

Bomber courtesy of alexanderj, shared with kleyland. Pours a dark brown with a small, off white head. Aroma of caramel and dark fruits. Taste was a mixed bag. I had a hard time picking up on the malt bill. Tart/sour flavors dominated the finish. Don’t quite know what happened to this one. Not that great for my taste.

22 oz. brown bomber bottle. No freshness date seen. Weak pfftt opens bottle. Poured out a deep, dark brown, with red highlights. Aromas are of coffee, cocoa powder, some figs. Weak, watery body. Flavors are about the same as the aromas. Undercarbonated. Not the best example of this style I ever had, that much is certain.

This one poured a dark brown color with little head showing. The aroma contains some coffee, dates, caramel, and raisins. The flavor is rather sweet with some alcohol showing through. I taste some dark fruit, molasses, and coffee. A big malty beer with some sourness in the finish. Overall a little too sweet but not bad.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, dark brown body with a wispy white head. Smell: Aroma of dark caramel, walnut meats, tobacco, dark fruits, and unfinished wooden furniture. Taste: Dark caramel maltiness with a subdued sweetness, at which point it becomes increasingly drying. Lightly fruity. Notes of roasted nuts, dried tobacco leaf, and wood. Mild earthy bitterness. Warming finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: Pretty good for a hefty, robust brown ale.

400 Years of history and it leads to a somewhat disappointing ale. Not a great strong ale. I do like the idea of a beer based on history. Tasted like a belgian, but missing something.

Really nice dark strong, or perhaps even "old" ale styled beer. Pours dark brown, with ruby notes, but with a fluffy off-white head. Aroma displays dark fruits, nuts, and malt, with a decent hop character. Flavor comes through all the way with a nice malty forefront, backed by more dark fruits and hints of chocolate.
