Commercial Description:
"400" Ale commemorates the founding of the first Virginia Settlement and with it, the founding of the American brewing industry. Beer was an essential component of everyday life in Jamestown, only the security and shelter provided by the triangular shaped fort and cultivation of edible (no doubt including barley) crops outranked the production of beer in importance. Fresh water flowing in local streams and the recently excavated well provided a source of potable water, but beer and other "processed liquids, primarily beer" were preferred drinks.
This ale, like the ales of the time, is brown in color. This beer may be more robust than 18th century brews, a liberty we chose to take. How could we possibly do justice to so important an event of 400 years ago, with anything other than a truly robust, full flavored contemporary "Imperial Brown Ale." Cheers

Bottle, from trade with The Beer God. Good aroma, sweet, malty. Molasses, lite chocolate/cocoa, raisin/plum, tobacco, little woody. Clean dark brownish orange, small head with good lacing. Bitter malty flavors, like aroma but I didn’t get as much as the fruit in the flavor. Chocolate, smoke, nutty seems to be what I get. Medium body, smooth mouthfeel, bittersweet finish. Good brew, it opened up nicely. While getting a lot of things out of the aroma it wasn’t very strong. Good to sip. Got a little better as it warmed. Fair amount of sediment that had settled in bottom that came out with last amount in bottle.

Bottle sampled. Pours brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma of caramel malts, earthy spices, molassas and some rum-soaked raisins. Flavor is caramel, dark fruit, brown sugar, and a hint of roasted nuts. A decent american strong

22 oz bottle. Flavors are pretty subtle, but nice which includes fruit, caramel, and a little hop. Not what I’d expect from a "American Strong Ale" - though it could be deceptively strong, in which case it masks well.

22 Oz Bomber-Pours a reddish brown color w/a slight tan head. Flavors of dark fruit, caramel, plum, grapes, & roasted malt. Kind of rough around the edges, but not in a bad way; a little gamey. Wouldn’t drink it all the time, but it was a nice change of pace.

Courtesy of artusory. Transparent mahogany, ring of film. Tons of fruity esters up front, berries/grape, with faint musty hop background. Flavor has a huge caramel kick, slightly oxidized, fades to roasted grain, big residuel sugar finish. Decent overall.

Bottle courtesy of Radek, shared with him, Jerc, and Mabel. Nice aroma - rich malt, tinny, but nice and sweet Dark brown, very little head. Very thin and watery body. Taste is mild sweetness, yet thin, watery and harsh. Hmm - I didn’t care for this one.

Bottle 650 ml
Appearance :Fine haze, light brown, tanned rocky top.4-
Nose :Slightly sour brown malt, deep brown character with clean good alcohol.
Flavour/Palate : Acidic ale with gentle note of burnt brown malts. Softer middle and finish. Interesting formula. Very late mineral hop accent. Gently warming.
