Commercial Description:
"400" Ale commemorates the founding of the first Virginia Settlement and with it, the founding of the American brewing industry. Beer was an essential component of everyday life in Jamestown, only the security and shelter provided by the triangular shaped fort and cultivation of edible (no doubt including barley) crops outranked the production of beer in importance. Fresh water flowing in local streams and the recently excavated well provided a source of potable water, but beer and other "processed liquids, primarily beer" were preferred drinks.
This ale, like the ales of the time, is brown in color. This beer may be more robust than 18th century brews, a liberty we chose to take. How could we possibly do justice to so important an event of 400 years ago, with anything other than a truly robust, full flavored contemporary "Imperial Brown Ale." Cheers

Bottle shared by Radek. Dark brown body, small khaki head. Lightly acidic, muted roast malt and raisins. Woody rum-like note. Similar flavour with tangy lightly acidic dark malts, muted sweet dark malt middle. Average palate. Interesting, but not particularly quaffable.

solid dark brown, fine tan head, streaks of drippy lace, sweet chocolate and rum raison aroma, rich dry chocolate flavor, gritty brown sugar character adds very little sweetness, nice dark fruit character blends well with the rum to make a chocolate rum raison cookie, touch of spicyness leads to a well balanced and lasting bitterness,

Lightly toasted caramel aroma, hazy brown in color with minimal head. Brown sugar like sweetness with some rasins and slight alcohol at the swallow. Mouthfeel has some creamy toffee. An interesting brownale. Thanks Docster.

Rich chestnut brown pour with a red glow around the edge. A thin, still layer of beige sticks around. Syrupy toffee and hazelnut aroma with a vinous purple grape quality. Very dark, like a bold and very hot Cabernet-rye whiskey blend. Mild tones of light-roasted Latin American beans and mandarin oranges. It’s a heavy collage. Pepper and alcohol flavors leap way out in front, with a smirk. Hops collide in step for a mild cleaning solution astringency, which has a straightforward pine and lemon character. Hot whiskey suggestions of charred oak and burnt caramel with raisins. Palate is fairly watery, which lets the alcohol through again. Dark and sugary, a rotted wood coating. A touch of hazelnut and bitterness at the very end. Successful, fairly, for what it is. A bit boring, though.

Clear deep mohogany body with a medium frothy light brown head. Sweet caramel and molassas aroma with a hint of rum-soaked fruit. Sweet molassas and rum-soaked fruit flavor with a touch of dry chocolate and a slightly astringent finish.

22oz bottle, in hotel in Norfolk, VA, no bottle opener, worked it out old school style, plastic cup from hotel....Ive been wanting to try this local beer, circumstances could be better but here goes...pours a dark chesnut color with a thin tan head....strong malt aroma with some caramel alcohol...thin watery mouthfeel....very sweet taste with alcohol finish...figs with a slight nutty start....I think I spent too much on this one and not sure what trouble I’m getting into by finishing the bottle (anyone know what the ABV% is)...overall an ok beer, enjoyed their pale ale much more

Quite nice. Not very complex but what is there is very good. High abv surely but it is well hidden. Thick, heavy palate. Aroma and flavor have sweet malt and brown sugar, and flavor has moderate hops as well. Thanks Bob.

Many thanks to Skyview for sharing. Murky brown color. Grainy nose. Smooth grainy malt body with a hoppy finish.
