Commercial Description:
"400" Ale commemorates the founding of the first Virginia Settlement and with it, the founding of the American brewing industry. Beer was an essential component of everyday life in Jamestown, only the security and shelter provided by the triangular shaped fort and cultivation of edible (no doubt including barley) crops outranked the production of beer in importance. Fresh water flowing in local streams and the recently excavated well provided a source of potable water, but beer and other "processed liquids, primarily beer" were preferred drinks.
This ale, like the ales of the time, is brown in color. This beer may be more robust than 18th century brews, a liberty we chose to take. How could we possibly do justice to so important an event of 400 years ago, with anything other than a truly robust, full flavored contemporary "Imperial Brown Ale." Cheers

A 22-oz bomber traded from kmweaver, pours a semi-hazy coppery amber brew with an average off-white head that quickly dissolves to a ring and some light film top. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, maple syrup, some roasted nuts, earthy spices and some alcohol. Taste is medium bodied with very light carbonation, along with flavors of dark chocolate, pitted dark fruits, some roasted nuts, caramel and a touch of flowery hops. Finish has some alcohol warmth, semi sweet along with some dark fruit flavors. A pretty solid American Strong Ale with plenty of alcohol.

Shared at Joebrew’s BBQ; courtesy of Skyview. Cloudy copper color with no head. Lots of caramel and molasses in the aroma. Sweet grainy and smoky flavors dominate the taste. A little sweet cherry finish. Damn fine brew.

22oz bottle acquired in trade with The Beer God (thanks!). Poured a deeper reddish/brown color with a larger sized tan head. Aromas of caramel, roast, light chocolate, nutty, and dark fruits. Tastes of dark fruits, toasted nuts, light chocolate, and caramel.

Dark ruddy-brown body with a filmy tan head. Deep caramel candy aroma. Prominent caramelization in the flavor as well with a note of toasted, plummy fruit skins and mild bitterness. Big chalky texture, but smooth and velvety too. This is a nice big brown ale. Williamsburg has executed a couple of nice beers with this series.

From the bottle poured a completely opaque deep brown with a creamy 1 finger, lacing, slightly tan head. Smells nutty and malty, with a faint hint of maple. Flavor is very nutty, but not from the yeast like some Belgians, but from the malt. I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve had a beer like this. Darker and more roasted malts than your average nut brown, smoother and sweeter than an imperial nut brown. This is much lighter and more drinkable than it looks. Even with the darker malts it still could have used more of a hop presence to add some complexity. Nice beer though.

Bottle. Deep nut-brown color. Loazy, littered head. Sugary, lightly spicy, though hard to place exactly what. Even wash front to back. Hint of warm alcohol on roof of mouth. Somewhat of a weak, limping finish.

Bottle sampled from Ststeline. Pours dark with ruby edges and a small compact tan head. Aroma of caramel, roast, alcohol, and spices. The flavor is sweet, caramel, roast, and finishes with a nice alcohol kick. Very nice!
