Commercial Description:
"400" Ale commemorates the founding of the first Virginia Settlement and with it, the founding of the American brewing industry. Beer was an essential component of everyday life in Jamestown, only the security and shelter provided by the triangular shaped fort and cultivation of edible (no doubt including barley) crops outranked the production of beer in importance. Fresh water flowing in local streams and the recently excavated well provided a source of potable water, but beer and other "processed liquids, primarily beer" were preferred drinks.
This ale, like the ales of the time, is brown in color. This beer may be more robust than 18th century brews, a liberty we chose to take. How could we possibly do justice to so important an event of 400 years ago, with anything other than a truly robust, full flavored contemporary "Imperial Brown Ale." Cheers

Bottle (22oz) shared with HogTownHarry & garthicus -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a cloudy dark orange-brown with a spare diminishing tan head. Aroma’s slightly sour along with some caramel malt, nuts and chocolate. Flavour: Yuck, that’s not pleasant. Quite sour (not in a good way) -- infected maybe? Average bodied. A shame to release such a poor beer for an "Anniversary" edition.

Bottle. Deep mahogany pour with a rich frothy tan head on the surface. Nice lacing around the edge of the glass once it recedes. Nose is Toasty malts, caramel, some almost candyish notes, light dark fruits, cocoa and wafts of smoldering earth. Taste is chewy and malty with light nuttiness, chocolate, toasted malts, chewy caramel, light earthy hops, and candyish flavors. Body is medium-full to full with a creamy carbonation tingle and minor stickiness. The 400 Ale is completed with a stronger earthy hop bitterness, chocolate, caramel, toasted malts, light coffee and dark fruits. Damn tasty!

Quite nice. Not very complex but what is there is very good. High abv surely but it is well hidden. Thick, heavy palate. Aroma and flavor have sweet malt and brown sugar, and flavor has moderate hops as well. Thanks Bob.

Clear deep mohogany body with a medium frothy light brown head. Sweet caramel and molassas aroma with a hint of rum-soaked fruit. Sweet molassas and rum-soaked fruit flavor with a touch of dry chocolate and a slightly astringent finish.

[729-20071001] 1pt6floz (w/ jerc, Radek Kliber, tupalev). Dark fruit and slightly roasted malt aroma with raisiny light sweet after hints. Hazy, dark red brown body with quick light tan bubbles. Sweet sweet dark figgy fruit malt flavour has roasted raisins. Medium body. Interesting, nice sweet roast.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy, dark brown body with a wispy white head. Smell: Aroma of dark caramel, walnut meats, tobacco, dark fruits, and unfinished wooden furniture. Taste: Dark caramel maltiness with a subdued sweetness, at which point it becomes increasingly drying. Lightly fruity. Notes of roasted nuts, dried tobacco leaf, and wood. Mild earthy bitterness. Warming finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: Pretty good for a hefty, robust brown ale.

Bottle courtesy of Radek, shared with him, Jerc, and Mabel. Nice aroma - rich malt, tinny, but nice and sweet Dark brown, very little head. Very thin and watery body. Taste is mild sweetness, yet thin, watery and harsh. Hmm - I didn’t care for this one.

Bottle: The aroma has lots of berries with some faint caramel. It pours a dark brown with some orange hilights with a small biege head. The flavor has lots of chocolate and caramel up front with some faint fruitiness and roastiness in the finish.
