Commercial Description:
"400" Ale commemorates the founding of the first Virginia Settlement and with it, the founding of the American brewing industry. Beer was an essential component of everyday life in Jamestown, only the security and shelter provided by the triangular shaped fort and cultivation of edible (no doubt including barley) crops outranked the production of beer in importance. Fresh water flowing in local streams and the recently excavated well provided a source of potable water, but beer and other "processed liquids, primarily beer" were preferred drinks.
This ale, like the ales of the time, is brown in color. This beer may be more robust than 18th century brews, a liberty we chose to take. How could we possibly do justice to so important an event of 400 years ago, with anything other than a truly robust, full flavored contemporary "Imperial Brown Ale." Cheers

Nice label on this 22 oz commemorative bottle; poured a midnight brown, with nary a single glimmer of light that can penetrate it. The head is thin and tan, this looks not unlike an espresso. The aroma is rich and malty with a hint of (I swear) peanut butter. This drinks rich and robust, chewy licorice, almost molasses, and old chocolate. This is a delicious brew, but doesn’t quite fit the hot season of the 400th anniversary. I wonder if Queen Elizabeth had any when she was in town. (#2850, 5/9/2007)

Pours deep almost black in color. Aroma is of sweet caramel, earthy with a very slight smokiness,as well as chocolate AND vanilla notes. Taste is very nice, chocolatey, molasses and exactly as expected. Very smooth and perfectly balanced. If anything, maybe a bit thin but this is probably my opinion only--and I think it is a very, very minor flaw in a superbly brewed beer.

Really nice dark strong, or perhaps even "old" ale styled beer. Pours dark brown, with ruby notes, but with a fluffy off-white head. Aroma displays dark fruits, nuts, and malt, with a decent hop character. Flavor comes through all the way with a nice malty forefront, backed by more dark fruits and hints of chocolate.

Bottle 19xx of 2007. The pour is deep blackish brown with a 1-finger tan head. Aroma of caramel malt, nuts, brown sugar, toffee, slight hops. The taste is scotchy and caramel malty, with brown sugar, slight tart yeasty cherry notes, and some chocolatey notes as it warmed. Solid heft and complexity make this one a rare treat. Try it with jerked pork and German chocolate cake!

Shared at Joebrew’s BBQ; courtesy of Skyview. Cloudy copper color with no head. Lots of caramel and molasses in the aroma. Sweet grainy and smoky flavors dominate the taste. A little sweet cherry finish. Damn fine brew.

Pours a transparent dark copper mahogany with a small, frothy light tan head with thin-lacing. Aroma has lots of sweet, toasty dark caramel and a touch of milk chocolate and mild smoke. Body starts fairly full and sweet with nice earthy caramel and chocolate flavor and a light balance of citrusy hops. Fairly complex and very drinkable. An enjoyable brew.

22oz bottle acquired in trade with The Beer God (thanks!). Poured a deeper reddish/brown color with a larger sized tan head. Aromas of caramel, roast, light chocolate, nutty, and dark fruits. Tastes of dark fruits, toasted nuts, light chocolate, and caramel.

Bomber. Why is this listed as an ASA? Clearly a brown. Anyway, clear, dark chestnut with a light brown head. Toasty malt nose, light nutty coffee notes, a touch of wood and chocolate. Rich toasted malt flavors, earthy hop bitter, nutty coffee and hints of fruit. Smooth, medium bodied. Medium bitter earthy nut finish. Very drinkable - good stuff!
