Limited to 2009 bottles. A porter, to which rapadou (Carribean unrefined cane sugar from Haiti) was added (but not caramelized rapadou as in the Rapadou Porter) and aged for two months in Virginia Gentleman bourbon barrels. It is a complex porter, to which the flavors of vanilla and a little bourbon have been added as a result of the aging process.

Oh wow a full flavor porter with a decent palate that I actually am impressed with! Finally a porter worth drinking. Lots if bourbon and roasty flavors that makes his porter almost drink like a stout. Which brings me to the question I always ask myself when I convince myself to give porters another chance. Why not a stout?

Moderate Sweet vanilla aroma. Slight head fades quickly. Light on the mouthful. Slight smokiness, hints of bourbon, fairly strong vanilla. Sweet and bitter chocolate hints on the after taste.

Well done, and well barreled. Bourbon is clearly present in initial aroma but doesn’t take over the beer or dominate. A touch less and it would be perfect. Pours black with good head and lacing. Finishes bitter and a little sweet - maybe that’s the Hatian rapadou. Some booze present as well, and roast malt, dark chocolate. Tap at Rustico.

I swear its everyday now. I come into work, place my rotting left index finger on the scanner to punch in, hoping the damn machine still recognizes my print after weeks of abuse and then only if I don’t flunk it and get locked out I look around despondently at all of the highly sought after brew left in the office. On this particular day it happened to be Alewerks Brewmasters Reserve Bourbon Barrel Porter. I picked up a bottle for two reasons. 1. The price wasn’t obscene. 2. I have tried porters before, wasn’t a huge fan but thought I owed it another attempt. Pours “oblivion” black. No head, thin lacing in weak halo along the perimeter. Instant dark burnt chocolate on the nose. Delicious first sip of rich coffee, caramel, chocolate and raison. All of the rich flavors do a great job at downplaying the ABV. Alewerks is quickly becoming one of the elite craft breweries out there.

Bottle at home. Thanks a bunch, Mike! Pours black with a small beige head. The aroma is vanilla, oak, sweet chocolate, light roast and a bunch of dried fruit. The flavor has notes of dried fruit, roasted malt, chocolate, bourbon (also the alcohol notes) and wood. The alcohol is a bit too harsh in the finish but it's very tasty indeed! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sampled at esbls. Dark brown with red. Minimal head. Big bourbon aroma and flavor. Some earth tastes. So drinkable and sweet. Nicely done.

22 oz. bottle shared at Dave’s tasting. Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. Pleasant aroma of vanilla and bourbon; not a whole lot of the base beer comes through. Perhaps a bit of roasted malt in the nose. The flavor is a bit more balanced with vanilla and bourbon along with roasted malt. A bit of alcohol heat at the finish. Fairly full bodied.

7/30/2010. 750 ml. bottle. Pours mahogany with a tan head. Chocolate, oak, roasted malt aromas. Sweet flavors from the oak and vanilla that turns bitter. Good balance and complexity. Awesome brew.

Bottle @ Bruce’s. Picked up @ Beer Run. The pour’s deep brown with a small head. The nose is cocoa, dark chocolate, a bit of sweet marshmallow and vanilla. The taste is dark chocolate. Roasted figs, dark fruits. More vanilla. A touch of boozy wood. Full body, moderate carbonation. Smooth, quite drinkable, pleasant.

Big bourbon hit right away on this one, but it doesn’t turn sharp and harsh like a lot of BBA porters. Lots of vanilla and dark sugar flavor and a bit of smoke and toffee in the finish. Good job keeping the sweetness in check while giving us the flavor!
