3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from a bomber. Murky, burnt red appearance, some beige cream on the edge. Charred sweet wood and barbecue dominate the aroma; orange and further citrus sweetness hide tepidly underneath. Musty carpet and a milieu of red spice - paprika and cayenne - finishing with some green apple. Very sweet by angular approach in the flavor; a honey marinade on maple smoked lean meat, firm and malty. Burnt caramel with hints of chocolate and the slightest solvent astringency throughout. Finishing bite of grapefruit bitterness, softened by sweet citrus. Thick and rich palate; a rare example of enough foundation to support high alcohol in this style. Still, however, it fails in the end to hide its flaws for the duration. Respectable.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle: 0947 of 2007
Deep dark amber coloured body with a tan head - this is an Imperial IPA? Aroma of hops of course, but more malt and pit fruit than anything else. Medium-bodied; Strong hops and malt in the taste coupled with spices, yeast and pit fruits. Aftertaste shows more of the same with raisins and metal more evident than an overdose of hops. Overall, a decent beer - not related to the style as much as they’d like, but a good beer to try nonetheless. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Kevin at Grape & Gourmet in Virginia Beach, Virginia on 29-September-2007.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: OCT 1, 2007 Bottle 1442 of 2007 purchased at Whole Foods in Vienna, VA. Pours a deep copper brown with a creamy tan and retentive head. Rich caramel and toffee malt aroma with some citrusy hops in the background. Medium bodied. Lots of heft in the malt profile, that has notes of caramel, raisens, and tobacco. This is countered by piney and citrusy hops. Finish is semi dry and peppery, with some some slight alcohol. Some lingering fruitiness. Not bad, but this seems more to dance closer to ASA or Barlywine territory as far as character.

A very good ipa. Citrus aroma. Flavor has sweet caramel, ripe fruit, pine, and a grapefruit finish. Light red color. I didn’t expect such a big, flavorful pale ale, but this beer delivered.

thanks to Skyview for sharing. Body so red that it reminded me of a recent conversation with Badgerben. Something about drinking my blood from a human skull after I threatened to drink something he’d left in my possession. In any event, seeing this beer poured brought back an inadvertent flash back to numerous bad vampire movies. Faint brown head. Some carmel detectable under the bitter hop nose. Sweet mouth feel and grapefuit flavor to the hops.
