3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle… Cloudy, caramel-colored ale with a small, creamy, khaki head. Good retention. The nose is of caramel, sherry and PNW hops. The flavor is far bitterer than the aroma implies. Sweet caramalt is almost, but not quite, balanced out by earthy PNW hops. Full-bodied and milky with soft carbonation. Bittersweet, lightly salty finish. A big KUDOS to growler for shooting this bomber in my direction!

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22oz bottle share courtesy of zrrbrrt. Bottle labeled # 1694 of 2007. Poured a dark mahogany color with an averaged sized off white head. I had a hard time nailing down the color and will settle for mahogany. Aromas of pine needles, citrus, caramel and lightly earthy. Tastes of caramel, citrus, chocolate, lightly roasty, caramel, and pine. The tastes were very interesting and really grew on me as I drank more. Struck me as ’different’ from most IIPAs but very good. Pine burps.

Deep orange. Small whitish head. Caramel, brown sugar, apple juice and hops in the aroma. Flavor is bitter with caramel, honey...again pretty bitter.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Shared by Stine. Pours from the bottle a really rich ruby red and rusty orange color, somewhat opaque, with a light tan head. Luminous and bright in the glass, the rich red color is striking. Nose of caramel and cherry malts, with pineapple and red apple hop scents. Rich and hoppy taste, with more cherry and caramel malt flavor, resembling other so-called imperial red/strong ales, but without the coarseness and bitterness that seems so common. Surprisingly good.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle in the 1900s/2007. This one is like a souped up version of the regular IPA. It pours medium brownish with 1-finger off-white head and great lacing. The aroma is caramel malt, brown sugar, hops, slight fruit and funk notes. Tastes caramel malty and hoppy, with a slight fruity brown sugary flavor at mid-palate, and some late citric and fruity yeasty estery notes. Complex, pretty dense palate.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle sampled at the Pre-RBSG ’Tosa gathering on 6/21/07: Pours a dark ruby mahogany with a nicely-lacing frothy dark tan head. Aroma of earthy piny hops with some dark caramel maltiness. Body starts with decent malty fullness and viscous caramel and piny balance toward a smooth, bittersweet finish. A nicely-balanced, enjoyable IIPA.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle #344 of 2007. Pours muddy brown with a thick brown head. Great lacing. Malty aroma with some tropical fruits. Very heavy taste, sharing some characteristics with some of the same brewery’s barleywines. Hop taste is indeed overwhelming.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottled. Poured a clear deep brown with a pool and a light ring of caramel head. Aroma was of sweet, toasted, and somewhat alcohol-fueled caramel along with less-descript darker fruits. Flavor found toasty caramel and plum notes.. sharper spicy alcohol notes detract from it.. bit too sharp, but otherwise tasty. Toasty and medium-bodied on the palate.. decent balance, but a couple sharp notes take a point off.
