aracauna (2221), Georgia, USA May 3, 2008 Updated: May 4, 2008 Thanks Immy: Bottle 1151: Pours a heavily chill hazed brown with an excellent light khaki head. The aroma is full of rich caramel malt, a nice note of american hops flowing around underneath and a distinctly tropical fruitiness. It’s almost like watermelon bubblegum and passionfruit. This is a pretty interesting big beer.
JCB (889), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jul 17, 2008 22oz from Immy - thanks, Tim! After some pale, dry beers I was really looking for something nasty and aggressive. Well, this bad boy scratched that itch, I can tell you. A deep copper pour with a nice fluffy head, there are some strong sugary malts in the aroma. Getting into the beer, there’s more hops than you can shake a stick at. Not angry hops but bold, chest-thumping hops nonetheless. It’s almost like a beer that has Double Bastard on the brain but wants to be a tad more friendly, brokering a peace resolution instead of slamming its fists on the negotiating table. And who doesn’t love peace? jgb9348 (1793), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA Jul 3, 2008 Bottle #1903 of 2007
Deep dark brown coloured body with a ruby tint and a nice thinnish tan head. Aroma of raisins, tobacco, roasted malt, caramel (big time), cherries and some brown sugar - very nice! Full-bodied; Strong malty flavour with a good amount of hops and a potent sweetness that lasts quite a while. Aftertaste shows character with tobacco and molasses along with some raisins and figs. Overall, a very nice beer, a shade away from a barley wine - but great to try! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Grape & Gourmet in Virginia Beach, tasted on 03-July-2008 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Butters (278), Richmond, Virginia, USA Jun 5, 2008 Very similar in many respects to the ironbound but without the extreme hop bitter finish. Big and malty aroma. Tastes malty sweet with floral hop notes. Alcohol warms the belly but is far from ’hot’. Medium body is very smooth with little carbonation. Good offering. luv2brew (141), Chesterfield, Virginia, USA May 31, 2008 First time sampling anything from this brewery. A buddy said watch out, and he wasn’t too enthused about this brewery. But i will have to say this is very good. Pours a deep amber with a head that takes its time leaving the glass. This is a mild tale with no grain or hop bitterness. I thought it was going to be a little bigger but it finishes very clean with a sweet finish. jrob_21 (829), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 14, 2008 Smuggled back from DC last time I was up there. Pours a cloudy brown color where you can barely see carbonation bubbles come up. Leather, port wine, and plum aromas. Taste is a little pungent up front that fades into a fermented fruit, plum, strawberry flavor. The finish finally leaves you with some metallic and bitter hops. Mid palate is decent with the port wine characteristics but everything else is just a little off.
