A red ale with a malty mouthfeel that finishes with a hop kick. Our flagship session beer at 5% ABV.

I purchased a 6 pack from Farm Fresh and got home with much excitement. That quickly ended when I smelled this beer. Then I tasted it and it was very sour and off. I later found out from Grape and Gourmet about the contamination issues. I would really like to try this at the factory.

UPDATED: JUL 9, 2008 Bottle from Once Upon a Vine North in Richmond. Hazy pour is the color of Boston baked beans. Fruity aroma with caramel, toffee and berry notes. Taste is hoppy with berry and sour cherry notes along with a malty finish. A little on the thin side. Some people below seem to be getting sour notes and some are not. I did. Do we have infection issues again?

Update: fewer infection issues in the second bottle from the same sixer. Rating updated accordingly.

From a fresh bottle bought direct from the brewery. Nice and strong but bitter. Though beer is supposed to be bitter. Reminds me a lot the hopheads of Victory. However this doesn’t have an unpleasant finish. Very drinkable and I’d say good for any occasion.

Nice slightly hazy ruby tinted deep caramel body with a thinnish off-white head. Aroma of grapes, malt, yeast and a bit of candy sugar. Light-bodied; Strong grape flavour coupled with malt and a bit of raisin flavour. Aftertaste shows a very light bodied beer with most of the taste just on the malt. Overall, a light beer that should be drunk on a hot summer day on the water (due to the name & front of the beer). I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors on 03-May-2008, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 26-May-2008.

Slightly hazy copper amber body with a medium fizzy tan head. Slightly nutty caramel aroma with some grainy notes. Caramel and grainy flavor with some fruity hints and a dry earthy hop finish. Medium body with moderately high carbonation.

Bottle from State Line. Pours clear ruby with 1-finger off-white head. Nose is scotchy malt, vinous fruit, berry, red grapey notes. Tastes malty, a bit merloty, with a lot of berry, grape, and some figgy notes throughout. Decent.

Reddish brown appearance with an average size beige head and sparce lacing. Malty aroma with some soft fruit lingering in the backgrouind. Earthy, moderately sweet flavor with caramel and toffee up front, balanced by low keyed hops in the aftertaste. Medium bodied, decently carbonated mouthfeel; lingering, briarish finish.

Probably my favorite of the standard WAW beers. Deep maroon color with great clearity. Slight cherry notes and very malty. I did not get the same "sourish" taste that others mentioned. Decent red.

Poured more of a cola color than a true ’red’, but isn’t that the case with most red-ales? Small head, grainy aroma. Medium bodied mouth feel, but tasty with the exception of a bit of an odd, sourish after-taste that diminishes proportionally with the number of bottles consumed :) I liked it and would be interested to see how it tastes out of tap at the brewery as opposed to the bottles bought from the local Harris Teeter in Chesapeake, about 80 miles +/- to the south.

(12oz body, thanks acrdz) Minimal off-white head atop crystal clear body. Aroma is medium sweet, caramel, some berry, light melon. Taste is medium sweet, peach, caramel, some berry, light earthy. Light-medium body, low carbonation.
