SirSlarty (68), Reading, Pennsylvania, USA May 27, 2008 nice deep brown-ish red. Smells and tastes exceptionally hoppy. Good head that faded quickly. Good malty finish.
bhensonb (3013), Woodland, California, USA Sep 1, 2008 12 oz bottle from Vintage Cellar. Pours a dark mahogany with a decent beige/tan head. Smells like nutty roasted malt. Near medium body with frothy carbonation. Has that brown ale sour touch, with gritty roasted caramel. Possibly a bit smoky in the finish, or maybe a light stroke of coffee. Pretty good drink. TheBeerLover (1013), DC Metro Area, USA Aug 9, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours to a bright, rusty brown color, with a slight tan head, and a moderate amount of carbonation. The nose is inviting, with aromas of sweet malt, nuts, and light touches of estery fruit. The palate is firm, with good sweet and nutty malt flavor, paired with light estery fruit, and touches of sourness. This beer finishes with more malty and nutty flavor up front, then ends with a touch of sourness that lingers. Well done, tasty, interesting take on brown ale. Not sure if the sourness was intentional, as I imagine colonial beers were a touch sour, but it works in this beer, and made it very drinkable, and one you could enjoy with a number of dishes. phishpond417 (1459), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA Jul 28, 2008 Pours a clear brown colour, little to no head. Honey, brown sugar, cinammon and caramel on the nose. Flavors are semi sweet, pleasent with a prevalent nutty taste- soft hop finish rounds off this well balanced brew. Soonah (519), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA Jul 3, 2008 From dkachur via trade. An ample off-white head popped up above a clear rust colored pour. Average lacing. The aroma was light spice, malt and even some light floral hoppiness to it. The flavor was the same with more hops than I anticipated. Plenty of tart fruit too. The body was thin and the mouthfeel was decent. bubbleflubber (654), Collinsville, Virginia, USA Jun 12, 2008 Ruby-amber pour with a sudsy cap that lasts down the glass. Fruity bouquet, nothing distinguishing. Sour fruits, dough and nuts to the tongue. Sour and doughy finish, with some slight biscuit entering the mix, due to the Cascade hopping on the backside. For some reason, this reminds me more of a Flemish Sour ale... sours like vinegar (without being "sharp") impart an integrated effect on the pull. Soft carbonation leaves a "flat soda" mouthfeel, and that doesn’t enhance the flavors I’m picking up. Certainly not my favorite brown (if that’s what we’ll categorize it... maybe I obtained a bad bottle), but interesting to rate.
