COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rich and smooth, AleWerks Porter is a traditional example from colonial times. A seven malt backbone is balanced with Fuggles hops. Sit back and relax after dinner with a pint. English Porter was first brewed, around 1720. It quickly became the beer of choice in England, Ireland and Scotland where it was brewed in ever increasing quantity. It remained popular well into the 1800’s. Brewer Robert Hare of Philadelphia produced the first commercial porter in America (1776). After the war, his porter was in great demand, buoyed no doubt by President Washington’s 1789 “Buy American” policy and his pronouncement that he would drink only porter made in America. Much of this porter came from Hare’s brewery, and some from that of Ruben Haines.

Pours a nice black with a fair, bubbly light cocoa head and some lace. Aroma is of chocolate, roasted malts and some coffee. Nice, balanced flavor, chocolate, malts and coffee.

Appearance: dark brown, very short, fizzy off-white head, medium lacing. Aroma: melted milk chocolate, with notes of dark chocolate and a little coffee, vanilla, and wood. Taste: mostly dark, bittersweet chocolate, a restrained hint of lactic tang, with notes of coffee, leather, wood, and hint of chalk. Finish: dry, crisp but smooth, a little sweet. Notes: Very chocolatey porter. Easy drinking, a little sweet, with a nice, but not overpowering, roasty undertone. Nothing wrong with this beer at all.

I would dispute the claim that this porter bears any real resemblance to an 18th century example, but it’s a solid enough beer, on its own. Roasty with a mix chocolate and cola flavors. It’s not as rich as better examples. Ashy feel with a mild tang. More roast bitterness than hop. Cola aftertaste. Mouthfeel is a bit fizzy. Pours a very dark reddish brown with a beige head. It’s an ok porter.

Pours black with medium tan head which dissipated to a film rather quickly. Aroma is dark chocolate and roastyness. Taste was sweet with coffee bitters on the finish. Somewhat creamy mouthfeel.

Bottle from a trade with ksurkin. Pours dark brown color with tan head. Aromas of roasted malts and chocolate. Sweet milk chocolate flavor with moderately roasted malts. Slightly ashy. Medium body with minimal carbonation. Thanks Ken.

pours nearly black with a medium-brown head (a bit dark for a porter), barely transparent. Right up front you get the taste of really burnt coffee, followed by a slight soy sauce maltiness, smooth and medium to heavy bodied. Good, not exceptional though.

Pours neatly black from bottle with little head. Has a fairly big chocolate note on the nose. A dry roasted flavor on the tongue. Finishes clean. The mouthfeel was a bit thin and it felt undercarbonated for my taste.
