COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rich and smooth, AleWerks Porter is a traditional example from colonial times. A seven malt backbone is balanced with Fuggles hops. Sit back and relax after dinner with a pint. English Porter was first brewed, around 1720. It quickly became the beer of choice in England, Ireland and Scotland where it was brewed in ever increasing quantity. It remained popular well into the 1800’s. Brewer Robert Hare of Philadelphia produced the first commercial porter in America (1776). After the war, his porter was in great demand, buoyed no doubt by President Washington’s 1789 “Buy American” policy and his pronouncement that he would drink only porter made in America. Much of this porter came from Hare’s brewery, and some from that of Ruben Haines.

AROMA: Dark malt, some milk chocolate, dark fruity esters. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Opaque black proper, no highlights. Small tan head evaporates quickly. /3

FLAVOR: Mostly standard porter palette. Some dark malt; cola-like taste. Lightly sweet. Faint roasted malt. No fruit flavor. Slight metallic tang. 12/20

MOUTHFEEL: Light/medium body. Mouthfeel is noticeably thin. Clean finish. 2/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Most likely this is an old bottle as it has all the makings of a traditional porter, just in restrained quantities. 5/10

Poured into a pint glass. Bottle. 3.25 A: Black color. One and a half fingers of frothy light brown head. Retention was poor though I admit that the glass went through the dishwasher (against my will). 3.75 S: Roasted malts with sweet chocolate. Lots of caramel. Sweet overall, but not overly so. Quite nice. 3.5 T: Tastes good, but not quite as good as the nose. Roasty with chocolate again, but a lot less sweet than the nose suggests. Mild hop bitterness with a touch of earthy flavor. Caramel and a hint of molasses. 3.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. A touch of creaminess and super smooth. 3.5 D: Solid beer overall. ★ 655 characters DavoleBomb, Nov 28, 2014

bottle @ Beer Run / Charlottesville VA --- Opaque black/brown color, long-lasting 1" brown head, sheets of lace. Nice aroma of malt and chocolate, maybe a little coffee & sugar. Taste is toasted malt that adds carbonation and clear hops on the swallow. Some malt hangs around to the end, but it is mostly the hops’ show. A good basic porter, but not exceptional.

Pour from bottle. Brownish with big sl fluffy head. Malts and toffee make it chewy. Pretty decent.

Yorktown, Va - Yorktown Pub - 12 oz bottle. Dark, oily brown pour, thin but persistent khaki colored head, a touch of lacing. Aroma has a hint of creosote, some nutty notes, a touch of chocolate. Flavor has a strong roasty presence with some bittersweet chocolate notes, a touch of black coffee, some earthy topsoil. Mouthfeel has a bit of chalkiness that I like in porters, but just a tad thin. Not bad.

Pours a dark opaque black with one finger of chestnut brown head. Nose shows some dark grain acidity and day old coffee, fruit skins, and dark malt. Acidic in the flavor with some dark fruit skins. Not too much going on, a little slick. Medium light bodied with a very subdued carbonation.
