Glouglouburp (1872), Montreal, Quebec, Canada May 13, 2008 In short: A sipper with a half-beer half hard-liquor flavour profile. Nice in small doses.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Clear dark golden with almost no head.
In long: A bit shy on the nose. Taste is rather intense. Ground cherries, oak and quite a bit of alcohol were my initial impressions. Then some tropical fruits, orange, some crisp honey and a short of hard-liquor that I’d compare to Southern Comfort. Rather sweet. Woody hard liquor finish. A very good sipper but honestly this is barely a beer to me. No nudity in public places and that beer are two Legislations that do not suit me.
Nephilium (415), Ohio, USA Apr 16, 2007 Poured from a growler. Not much carbonation, believe this would have more to do with the growler then the beer. Strong sweet, fruity aroma from the beer. Dark cloudy reddish amber in color, just a lacing of head. The beer itself tastes very sweet, with a hint of plums and other fruits hiding in the background. Two big notes, the finish was very quick, leaving nothing behind, and the alcohol content is not noticeable at all. I’ll have to get out there and try it fresh from the tap. TheOrange (339), Kent, Ohio, USA Mar 24, 2007 On my last trip to Willoughby, I got a sneak preview of this as it was not yet on tap. Deep, brown pour with a big tan head. The aroma was very sweet, and almost honey like. The flavor was true to the aroma with many additional flavors including some cherry and some floral flavors. The high alcohol content didn’t really come through, the finish was quick and dry but not alcohol like. I think I will need to go back in a couple of weeks and make sure the on tap version is like the sample I received.
Drew (2374), Kent, Ohio, USA Feb 16, 2004 Dark ruby - almost black, but it's clear, you can see thru it if you hold it up to the light. Topped with a light tan head that left silky lacing all the way down. The predominant aroma/taste is sweet - especially the aroma. Other interesting flavors are cherries, dark chocolate, and an the immediate warm alcohol at the back of the throat. This beer is very thick - I won't say "cloying", but it is very syrupy with a long sweet finish. IBU is listed at 65 - although that's a lot, it can't compete with the huge malt presence. This actually tasted fantastic with their chocolate cake. hershiser2 (845), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Feb 8, 2004 Deep burgandy with a 1" fluffy off-white head. Deep fruitiness in the nose (maybe grape?) with lots of alchohol up front. RICH and THICK- fruity flavor, with a bunch of booze right there- can't hide it. This is big beer.
