BBE 26 May 2014 - Pours pitch black with a bubbly white head. Aroma of grainy malts, some hints of roastiness and fruits. Taste is fruity, quite salty and mildly roasty with some hints of licorice, grassy hops and grainy malts. Finish is salty, hoppy and fruity with some mild roastiness and notes of licorice. Not your typical black IPA, but still quite tasty.

Bottle 0.33l at home via alesbymail. BBE 26 May 2014. Colour is black with tiny brownish white head. Aromas and flavours: Sweetness, chocolate, roasted malts and hops.

330ml bottle. Clear dark brown colour with average, creamy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, tan head. Excellent hop aroma, lots of grapefruit, blood orange, pine. Taste is initially minimally sweet dark malty, some chocolate, a touch of orange, later bitter hoppy, in the last third again slightly more malty and chocolately; lasting herbal, bitter hoppy finish, smooth palate.

Bottle. Black with some hopiness. Medium body and slightly floral. Reminded me of a cross between an IPA and a stout as I still struggle with the concept of a dark IPA. Liked it.

Pours a black colour with a small foamy head. Aroma of roasted malts, yeast and grass. Flavour of roasted malts, strong dough-like yeastiness, grassy hops, leather, salt and sweetish fruits. Medium bodied, oily mouthfeel and a salty, grassy and roasty finish. Alcohol comes through. Rather bland for a Black IPA and lacks bitterness.

Pours pitch black color with a large and thick off-white head. Aroma of mandarin, roasted malts, some pine needles, hops, some licorice notes and caramel. Flavor has quite a lot salty licorice, mild roasted malts, resiny hops, orange, faint grassy notes and some lemon. Quite slick, bitter and malty palate with a burnt finish. Very heavy mouth feel. A tad too salty but otherwise very good black IPA. Better than the standard Conqueror.

Oct 2012 - Roasted barley imparts smokiness. I suppose it is a bit more hoppy than your average porter though overall. I’ve had better black IPAs for sure, but there’s nothing wrong with this.

Half pint at the Nags Head in Reading. Black, almost no head. Well hopped, quite bitter and smooth. Very dry finish. Decent hoppy aroma. Reasonable but a bit overdone with the hops.

Cask gravity at White Cliffs BF 2013. Black beer lasting beige head. Leafy hoppy aroma. Yes a good hoppy beer. Yes hits all the its big and hoppy ticks. Light in mouth at same time. Some syrupy alcohol comes through at end. Good though. Great aroma.

Bottle at Chriso’s tasting in London, 121230. Dark amber/brownish beer with a lasting beige head. Malty roasted aroma, vanilla, caramel, hoppy bitter, grass, chocolate, cocoa powder, milky, citrus, pine apples, mango notes. Pine needle flavor, caramel, chocolate, citrus, mango, pine needles, cocoa powder, hoppy bitter, vanilla notes. Nice beer with a chocolate finish, some pine, citrus and chocolate.
