Our second beer is Knight of the Garter, launched on June 14th to coincide with the Ceremony of the Garter at Windsor Castle. It is a straw-coloured Golden Ale (3.8% ABV) easy summer drinking with a distinctive fresh citrus hop aroma. As with Guardsman, it is brewed with premium Maris Otter pale malt from a traditional floor sweeping. Again we are using whole leaf hops – English Pilgrim in the copper and a blend in the hopback, including American Amarillo with their gorgeous orangey aroma.

Drinkable and nicely balanced ale with a real biscuity malt character and a hint of citrus. Decent.

Bottle at home courtesy of Theydon_Bois, cheers Colin! Honey blonde with temporary fluffy cream head that soon collapses to a lacing. Peppery citrus nose. Sweet biscuit malt up front with lemon and passion-fruit following in behind. Medium carbonation. Touch of yeast esters and English hop bitterness.

On cask at the Half Moon, Windlesham dispensed into a UK pint glass (Feb ’12). Pours a clear golden blonde colour with a small frothy white head. Bitter floral hopped aroma - wonderful, this was freshly tapped and as good it gets ! Very well hopped for a 3.8% session beer in my opinion, all citrus notes - pineapple, orange, grapefruit showing up. A little sweet malt flavour also come into play. Light in body, low in carbonation leaves you with a tangy but not too bitter aftertaste. Another great beer from Wndsor & Eton, in the true ’session’ mould.

Cask - The Harp, London. Poured with a fine white head on a clear, bright amber body. Good crisp & juicy, lightly zesty hops all-round. Rather crisp & refreshing, soft carbonation, light to medium body, soft bittersweet - grassy hops & biscuity pale malts - finish. A solid, solid golden ale that really hit the spot after an all you can eat, salt & sugar loaded Chinese.

UPDATED: JUL 8, 2013 Cask conditioned at Reading BF 2012. Clear pale gold. Lasting white head. Its a decent slighly grassy hoppy golden ale. Yes fine if not exciting. Hops on finish are ok though 2.9/5 re rate bottle from Oddbins London Bridge. Not sure why I bought this as I’ve had it before on cask. Oh well, chance to re-rate. Decent hoppy spicy hoppy finish and rather a good beer I think so worth re-rating as I’ve jumped it up a bit.

Cask, Philarmonic, Liverpool. Golden looks with an unremarkable white head. Biscuity malts and citrus notes the order of the day here in the nose and flavour. Gentle carbonation. Restrained bitter finish. Straightforward but satisfying.

On tap @ the Haymarket! Pours golden with a creamy head. The nose is citrus, floral and then sweat. The sweat is even more pronounced on the taste but there are still citrus notes there too. The palate is medium bodied with a creamy texture and a clean finish. Overall, the sweat does build the more you drink, though it’s a well constructed beer!

On cask at The Haymarket. Pours a blonde colour with a thick white head. A lovely citrusy aroma with lemons, oranges and hibiscus flowers. Lemon and orange flavours again with a clean, crisp finish. Moderate carbonation and an oily mouth-feel. Very nice.
