Dark brown, almost black beer with medium head. The aroma is very intensive with dominating deep chocolate, dark fruits, dried plums, raisins, lots of vanilla, spices and alcohol. It has a quite thick body. Creamy mouth feel. Taste is sweet but not cloying. Good balance between bitter/dry fruits and sweet chocolate there. Although alcohol is very strong. This beer need more bottle aging. Still that’s a beautiful beer. Perfect for cellar aging.

Pitch black with almost no head. Full body with dark malts, spices, candy sugar, alcohol, cough drop. Some jagermeister without the stickiness. More of the oak in the finish, a hint of read fruit there too. Long finish

Dark brown to black colored, small non lasting beige head. Aroma is caramel, bit chocolate, dark fruits, spices, yeast, aniseed. Taste is medium to very sweet brewing sugar and caramel, some chocolate and roasted malt, strong spices, some aniseed, some herbal notes, slightly oaky vanilla. Quite boozy and very warming. Full bodied, soft carbonation, thick.

Dunkelbraunes Bier mit einer ordentlichen beigen Schaumkrone. Geruch röstmalzig, schokoladig, hefig, sehr reife Früchte. Geschmack sehr fruchtig röstmalzig, reifes Obst, schokoladig, leicht alkoholisch, holzig.

Bottle at home. Pours dark brown with a steady beige head. Aroma of coffee and dark chocolate, some dates, but overall largely disbalanced by the alcohol. Body is very sweet and a typical stingy alcohol burn that is typical for the high ABV beers made by the Proef. This same body texture and characteristic coming back in Mikkeller’s Big Worst, Angelo etc. Not a particular fan of this. Taste (in aftertaste when most of alcohol sting is gone) I have mocca coffee, coffee bitters and intense dark chcolate. Preferred the very first batch of the normal Winterkoninkse much better.

American oak aged version of Winterkoninkske Haspengouwse Grand Cru, even more limited and therefore even harder to find; basically the same beer, but with added tannins, leading to a more bourbon-flavoured finish and a somewhat sharper feel, which contrasts a bit with the creamy, sweet, fluffy, overpoweringly delicious character of the regular version. I think I prefer the original a bit more.

6/VI/14 - 75cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ Katie & Kevin’s place - BB: n/a (2014-594)

Clear dark brown beer, big irregular beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: lots of dried fruits, chocolate when opening the bottle, bit of chlorine, raisins, banana and banana peel. MF: ok carbon, full body. Taste: pretty bitter, cocoa powder, dried fruits, lots of alcohol, bit sugary, more alcohol, banana, some citrus. Aftertaste: alcohol, overripe banana, dried fruits, raisins, bitter hops, bit sour. Honestly? I like the original one WAY more than this one!
