Extra strong dark beer. Very thick foamy head. Very interesting palate, changes quite a bit without being too messy. Great beer!

Jan. ’16. A 0.75 l bottle at Känguruh, Vienna, vintage 2014. It poured very dark and hazy brown body with a small brown hued head. Served a bit too cold. Beautiful, very intense aroma of chocolate, cocoa, licorice, dried fruit and some spices like cloves. Alcohol. Flavor was sweet, alcoholic, maybe a bit too much of both. Pleasant sweet dark malt dominated by the chocolate and licorice included everything else listed in the aroma, too plus caramel and wood, while dried fruit was more pronounced. Full bodied, with a long, warming and sweet finish that followed the taste pretty much. A little bit too strong despite the complexity, but still a really nice Belgian.

On tap it is a dark amber color with a small head. The nose has dark fruits, licorice and spice. Taste has more dark fruits, alcohol, figs and some a little bite on the finish. Good beer.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
750ml bottle shared @Mad for Beer (Rome). Pours brown/reddish with a little but persistent off-white head. Aroma is rich and powerful, dried fruits, oak, cherry, light chocolate, oxidation. Flavour is complex, medium to heavy sweet with a good bitter end, alcohol. Full body, medium carbonation. Amazing.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
2011 bottle. Sarphati Oude Olie. Flat, medium brown. The aroma is oxidized toffee, choc, molasses, wood...but oxidized in a way that seems rounded. Quite sweet, with a nice sticky character. There’s a sticky molasses character, with a bit of boozy woodiness in the finish. The sweetness really mellows this out.

Bottle of "Sarphati Grand Cru Oud Olie," at least 5 years old. Pours a deep brown/black colour with no head. Minimal carbonation. Bit of soy on the aroma, and toasty chocolate notes. Tastes rich but oxidized, with a slightly sweet finish. A very cool bottle, thanks fiulijn.

Shared bottle, pours dark brown with fast falling beige head. Aroma of candy, caramel, dried fruits and milk chocolate. Extremly sweet taste with a touch of bitterness in the finish. Good beer but to sweet for me.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
750 ml bottle of "Bink’s Grand Cru" served in a Porter Bar goblet. A wire bound synthetic ’cork’ is way too hard to remove! Thankfully, the beer was well worth the effort.
Pours dark brown; opaque in the glass but dark ruby highlights at the edges. Weak head.
Aroma: a mix of dark dried fruits including cherries and some pleasant, mild alcohol esters. Hints of chocolate that are more subtle in flavor.
Feel: a soft, full body with light carbonation, some warming alcohol. A bit syrupy.
Flavor: rich and complex. Just a touch sweeter and more alcohol laden than I’d prefer. Loaded with raisins and other dark dried fruit flavors. Faint spicing. Good balance other than being slightly over sweet.
Overall: This is a fine sipping Belgian ale, best served fairly warm/ Admirably the high ABV is partially hidden.
