mephisto (1125), Taiwan Jan 18, 2008 my type of brew, a warm and hearty winter offering that is deep brown in color and topped with foamy beige head. the aroma is plum and cloves; the taste is an explosion of fruity flavors. the hopping is subdued but appropriate for this style of ale.
Lubiere (3324), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Sep 27, 2008 Deep clear brown ale with burgundy hues, and a thick oka head. A pleasant herbal aroma, slight caramel, currants and alcohol. In mouth, a sweet caramel with nice light maple, light hopping, cointreau overtones, lacking a bit in body, but overall, a very nice x-mas ale with warming alcohol. Bottle at Oud Arsenaal, 1.90 Euro, Nov. 2006. pnista (894), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Sep 26, 2008 Been sitting on the shelf for about a year at my local, but I think it has only helped this beer. Pours a reddish brown with a clarity and moderate head. The nose is sweet. Alcohol, spice, some dark malt to caramel. A little fruity. Nothing particularly offensive. The mouthfeel is middle of the road, not unpleasant, not full or viscous. But smooth. The flavors are the real surprise. Fruity and sweet, for sure. Dark fruits are ripe, spice is in there, and also some surprising chocolate. Smaller alcohol. And really just a hint of juniper berry. Maybe a bit of medicine in the finish, but not bad at all. jgb9348 (1848), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA Sep 14, 2008 Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, pit fruits, raisins, nuts and a bit of cherries. Medium-bodied; Strong malty flavour up front with potent pit fruit sweetness and a decent amnout of yeast following behind. Aftertaste shows some malt, a lot of sweetness and a nice flavour. Overall, a good belgie - definitely worth trying...and it looks like you can find it in the U.S.A! I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Beer Mania in Bruxelles, Belgium on 28-December-2007, sampled on 13-September-2008 from the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Floback (267), N-town, Florida, USA Sep 11, 2008 Bottle from Knightly Spirits. Pours a Cola-brown color and a moderately-sized tan head. The pour is thick and syrupy. Nose is strong caramel and shoebox. The flavors are robust with strong notes of caramel, oak, various nuts, dark fruits, candi sugar, and plum. The consistency and flavor reminds me of a barleywine with a nice bitterness embarked by the hops presence. Soft/medium carbonation and full body. Goes down smooth and velvety. A nice warming beer for the holidays or any day. alexanderj (1342), San Diego, California, USA Sep 9, 2008 Bottle that was in a Christmas of Belgium pack I believe. Color of dark, ruby brown; light brown head. Aroma of yeast, wheat, brown sugar and fruit. Flavor of pit fruit, brown sugar, yeast; a bit of bread and spices. Flavor was alot of pit fruit.
