Milk Stouts are brewed with sugar from cow’s milk to give the beer a sweet, creamy tone. Bristol breweries were once famous for making the best milk stouts around. For our take on the traditional recipe we’ve used copious amounts of chocolate malts and laced it with vanilla to create a milkshake rich, velvety and satisfying dark beer.

MALTS • Maris Otter Pale, Chocolate, Crystal, Roast Barley, Torrefied Wheat.
HOPS • Phoenix

This sample bottled 17th March 2016, 4.3%, Motueka, Amarillo, Magnum hops, "Milk Stout Milk Shake". Solid black body, ivory head at first soapy and loose with big bubbles, settling into a nice thin layer, then dissipated. Aroma of coffee and hint of dark soy sauce. Sweet with light chocolate bitterness. Body is delicious and milky with a clean dry finish and slight astringency left on the tongue.

Small beige head. Opaque black body. Roasty earthy chocolate pudding aroma with dusty notes. Sweet earthy chocolate pudding taste with burned notes. Mild, soft, flat mouthfeel. Mid-bodied. Sweetish chocolatey cold coffee aftertaste with rye crisp bread notes. Nice, drinkable, unusual. (0.5l bottle, odd bins, Edinburgh.)

Bottle from Oddbins, Bruntsfield, Edin. Pours a very dark brown with a reddish hue. No real head. A small amount of lacing in the glass. Roasty aroma. Dark malts. Espresso. Burnt toast. Bit of herbal hoppiness. A small hint of the musk from the vanilla. A whiff of a half-burned cigar in there too. Sweetness in the taste with a beautiful richness. Rounded, full mouthfeel for the ABV (which is only 4% here). Chewy texture. Really low carbonation. Sweet, brulee’d notes. More vanilla flavour comes through mid-way which adds to the decadence! Light bitterness and a drying finish which keeps the palate balanced. Delicious!
