In all his 25 years of brewing alchemy, Kirby Nelson had never tried to create a Porter. In his mind, it was about time. And after tasting #003, you’ll wonder what in the world he was waiting for. “A trio of Caramel, Special Roast and Deep Chocolate malts get this Porter party started, then Wisconsin-grown Brewer’s Gold Hops adds a bit of bittering to keep everything under control. This brew is bold and assertive. And I’ll be bold and assertive and say you’re gonna’ love it.”

Sample at the tap room. Dark brown color with a medium foamy tan head that recedes steadily to a film. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Light-bodied with a roasty character and flavors of chocolate malt and coffee. The finish is burnt malt and dark chocolate. Decent overall.

Bottled. Poured clear, medium brown with a nice, sticky beige head. The aroma picked up sweet brown, chocolate, and nutty notes with a second wave of deeper cocoa and light detergenty hops.. aiight. The flavor found watered-down chocolate malts and light licorice at the core, with spicy herbal hops and prickly carbonation around.. finished spicy and a touch sharp. Light-medium bodied with high-ish carbonation.. OK feel.. drinkable, but a ways from great.

On tap at the Nitty Gritty. Pours brown with a white head. Could not create much lace no matter what. Aroma has some brown sugar and caramel. Not much else. Taste follows, a bit more life there. Medium bodied. Shrug? Perhaps this was an old keg or was flat. It was not what others have said it was. My style take would have been a not-too-tasty brown.

Dark brown pour w/ a nice cream of wheat brown oatmeal like head with some nice lacing. Aroma of light chocolate some lactose a fair amount of roasty malty notes a light pine as well. Palate is well coated and lightly creamy. Flavor is well roasted a touch of almost chalky bitter cocoa. Mellow nutty tastes come out more with a little bit of warmth hazlenut or at least nutty plus cocoa makes it seem taht way. Finishes dry with a touch of piney hop. Overall a pretty good beer.

Bottle. Pours to a deep brown body. The aroma is nutty. The flavor is like a nutty brown ale meets a dry stout. Medium full body.

12 oz. bottle poured to a shaker at Come Back In in Madison, WI. for their Derby/Maifest gathering. Showed a dark brown color, with some amber highlighting, off white/light tan head foam, and wavy lacing. The nose was sweet roastiness, toffee, & treacle, with a slight, inoffensive, vegetal hint. Chocolate, and a bit of smoke & char added to the taste profile. Medium bodied, moderately bitter, with fair carbonation, and a mild, not overly robust nature, that still retained good flavor to the finish.

Pours black with off-white foam. Taste is of dark malts wit a pleasing bitter aftertaste. A bit thinner than a lot of micro porters, but I like that as it adds to the drinkability. Good foam retention. The only thing that is way off is the aroma. It lacks those wonderful musty English esters entirely. Not bad, but nothing terribly interesting going on here.

Pours a dark brownish-black with a nice sized tan head. Nose is of malt. Nice and creamy on the palate, the taste is of dark roasted malt, coffee and burnt toast. Slightly dry on the finish, this is a good porter that pairs well with both brats off the grill and French fried cheese curds.
