Draft to mini-snifter at Witch’s Hat. Looks good; an opaque black with off-white lacing. Smells and tastes of dark malt, chocolate, molasses, and coffee roast. Mouthfeel is medium full-bodied. Good beer.

Aroma is nutty, tons of roasted malt, some light chocolate and coffee. Appearance is black, but thin, light brown head. Taste is bitter, roasted malt, some licorice, coffee, cocoa. Mouthfeel is thinner than I?d like, but a good carbonation and flavor hangs. Overall, it?s very bitter but pretty good.

On tap: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy molasses, moderate chocolate, black licorice, and a touch of espresso. It?s a dark brown with no transparency and a two finger tan head that eventually fades to a thin film outlined by a thicker ring. There is a thin sheet of lacing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate-heavy molasses and moderate chocolate. The finish has light-moderate pine, espresso, and anise. It?s medium-full bodied with mild carbonation and a somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Overall, a little heavy on the molasses for my preferences.

Sweet coffee and toffee up-front then transitions into a dark/deep stout. Fairly strong and alcohol really shows on the back-end.

Bottle from Sean - thanks! Silky black pour with no head. Chocolate, toffee, and noticeable molasses in the aroma. Taste is rich chocolate and fudge with caramel (literally, candy caramel), molasses, darker plum, and some alcohol burn into the finish. Some hop bitterness as well. Coasting mouthfeel. Semi-rough but nicely done. Good beer.

From notes. On tap at Witch’s Hat on March 17. The pour is black with a dark khaki ring of head and decent lacing. The lace is a little surprising for a beer with such little head. The aroma is a little sweet on the front end. It fades through, and is a little bitter on the back. There is a strong licorice presence with light notes of chocolate, roast, and some coffee. The flavor is is a bit different. It’s got more of a licorice dominance with a booziness that kicks up on the back end. The mouth feel is thick. creamy, with a light carbonation and a good dry and bitter aftertaste.

At first sip. Tons of coffee. Malty then a bit of bitter dark chocolate. Full bodied mouthfeel, extremely viscous for a beer. Not much to the aroma. Sweetens as the beer warms up, very nice. Pitch black, with just a little chocolate cream color foam lining the glass.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a coffee brown head that dissipates to the edges and laces. Aroma has strong roasted malts and a good amount of booze with underlying licorice and dark chocolate. Flavor has bitter chocolate and strong roasted malts with booze and molasses coming out in the finish.

Draft at the brewery. Lacking pour with a tight tan head. Chocolate and light malt aromas. Sour malt and weird...
