Bottle (33 cl) from The Cracked Kettle. Hazy reddish brown, medium fluffy tan head. Nutty and earthy aroma with some leather (brett?) notes. Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Dry with medium bitterness.

Bottle at Trappist in Ninove. Caramel aroma and taste. Plain and sweet, a pretty average dubbel.

Deep mahogany pour with ruby highlights. Nice creamy, off-white head that fades to about a centimeter thick and stays that way for some time. Thick coating left behind as it fades and dwindles away. Big peppery, hoppy aroma. A muted sweetness, mixed with a bitter and dry hop flavor coats the mouth. Very hoppy. Watered down malt flavor. Spicy and warm. Not bad.

Poor abbey dubbel in my opinion. Nice color but musty and sour smell and taste. Yuk!

This could be as brown as it gets without being black. Very dark with just a touch of haze to it and a mocha head that sighs and is gone after a minute. I have just had a good example of dopplebock before and while the colour is similar, the aroma is a world apart. There’s a gorgeous berryfruit aroma of gooseberry, redcurrants and grape. The malt, which was what the dopplebock was all about, takes a back set i the aroma. This has a whiff of blue cheese and a suggestion of maturity. The flavour has a sourness that I wasn’t expecting and then there’s a rush of white wine, sweet berry juiciness and a kiss of nuttiness. If I was tasting blind I’d imagine this to be more like a Faro Gueze. It’s sweet and sour at once. The finish is long and astringent and gives you food for thought. Interesting.

Cloudy brown with an off white head. Malty in taste with a certain nuttiness to the flavor, there is a bit of sweetness along with full bodied strength.

Dark amber in appearance with an oddly fizzy head. The aroma is of dark fruit. The flavor has elements of grapes/raisins and a touch of yeast. There was a hint of sourness in this, a characteristic in an ale I don’t care for but it wasn’t too bad overall.

Infezione, peccato perché un primo assaggio; qualche nota cantinosa si percepisce lontana oltre l’acetoso.
