This award-winning dark brown Old Ale has an intense dry, coffee and slightly smoky aroma. There’s a delicious and satisfying mouth feel of silky viscosity before the taste of coffee and molasses covers your taste buds. The aftertaste of liquorice from the malt and slight spice from the relatively light use of hops complements the preceding flavours very well and forms the perfect end to this beautiful beer.

Gravity @ Wandsworth Common Halloween Beer Festival. The pour’s deep brown with a tiny off-white head. The nose is deep nutty earthiness, some chocolate and sweet syrup. Toasted brown bread and caramel. The taste is toasted leafy tobacco, some prune and dark fruits. A bit of spiced pumpkin cake and runny toffee. Chocolate malts. Medium body, smooth. Overall, a fairly flavorful effort. Solid stuff.

[Bottle from Pallants of Arundel] Pours a deep ruby-brown with a moderate cream head. Medium carbonation - rather fizzy for the style. Plenty of smoke up front, then a good coffee base with slight liquorice hints and a light earthy bitterness. Decent flavor, but the mouthfeel is too thin and fizzy and the finish is on the short side.

Not quite black, but very dark red with a small bubbly head. It could easily be mistaken as a porter with its roasted malts which ooze of chocolate and coffee in both aroma and taste.

Cask conditioned at Merton Winter Beer Fest ’13. Dark brown to chestnut with cream head. There is a sharp, fruitiness to this beer, quite tangy with an additional nutty flavour. Some dark roasted malt notes, coffee, chocolate in addition to liquorice. Later a slight tartness comes through. Reasonable.

Bottle conditioned - Aroma quite sour with some wine notes and yeast. Flavour has some full and fruity malts but also some light sourness.

Dark brown verging on black with a tan head. Roasted malt, smokiness and coffee with a slight, but not unpleasant, hint of sour fruitiness peeking through. Really enjoyable beer and a good example of the style.

Cask dispense at the Half Moon, Windlesham (Feb ’12). Pours a dark mahogany brown with a thin beige / off-white head. Chocolate, roasted malts and dried fruit aroma. Well balanced flavours in the taste, molasses, dried fruits, a little spice, slighty musty tasting, biscuity and roasted malts in the background with a hint of chocolate and coffee. I enjoyed the mouthfeel of this beer, carbonation quite moderate with a slightly burnt/smoked flavour in the aftertaste with a sour edge. Overall a very pleasant winter beer that warms the palate.
