Bottle shared at CPK. Clearish brown pour with a faint head. Light roast and fruit in the nose. Prune and raisin. More ripe, dark fruits in the flavor, lightly sweet, not too bitter. Medium in body with average carbonation. A little tangy on the finish, fruity, faintly roasty. Decent.

Cask @ Charlies Cph.
Pours dark mahogany with a small, staying, creamy, beige head. Aroma has lovely chocolate, light roasted and good hazel notes. Lowish carbonation, impressive creamy mouthfeel - especially for the ABV. Flavour is sweet, cocoa with hazel syrup, light coffee and chocolate. A bit short-lived in its finish, but with okay malty dryness. Fine beer.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask conditioned at Merton Winter Beer Fest ’13. Dark brown to chestnut with cream head. There is a sharp, fruitiness to this beer, quite tangy with an additional nutty flavour. Some dark roasted malt notes, coffee, chocolate in addition to liquorice. Later a slight tartness comes through. Reasonable.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask dispense at the Half Moon, Windlesham (Feb ’12).
Pours a dark mahogany brown with a thin beige / off-white head.
Chocolate, roasted malts and dried fruit aroma.
Well balanced flavours in the taste, molasses, dried fruits, a little spice, slighty musty tasting, biscuity and roasted malts in the background with a hint of chocolate and coffee.
I enjoyed the mouthfeel of this beer, carbonation quite moderate with a slightly burnt/smoked flavour in the aftertaste with a sour edge.
Overall a very pleasant winter beer that warms the palate.

Cask (GBBF2011, Wed)
Darkish brown, with a small head. Slightly musty aroma. There’s some wet sheep in the mouth, and I guess in the aroma too when you look for it. Roasted and slightly coffee-like finish, but also very grainy. Alas the spicy biltong dimished our ability to taste this one, which is a shame, it’s a good beer.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Now this actually comes on like a genuine old ale. Very dark black. The woody aroma with hints of lactic sourness immediately strike you and there is some bitter chocolate in there too. Palate is much the same, with some sour notes on the finish. Excellent, chewy, complex stuff. Cask (gravity), London Drinker beer festival.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask Gravity at the Green Dragon, Croydon. It pours deep brown with a small off-white head. The nose is earth, roasty, toast, cola, dark fruit, blackcurrant and strawberry jam. The taste is bitter-sweet, dark fruit, berry, treacle, liquorice, wood and light bitterness with a dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Nice fruity character. Tasty.

A Mes rate: gravicask at Twickenham beer festival.
Mahogany red with a good beige head and in decent condition. Strange but pleasant aroma. Full of Devonshire clotted cream and marzipan with a rich malt base and plenty of tobacco. A similar flavour but with a strong smoky character. Lots of charred wood, boardering on ashy but not quite. Wow, this is almost rauchbier smokiness, especially in the finish. Pleasing dried fruit and pipe tobacco finish. Lots of character. A very good old ale though not exactly what I would call true to style.
