In 1777, some former lands of Dr. Thomas Walker were laid out into lots along Main and Water streets. On Main Street, numerous hotels and small lodges were established to house the itinerant men who traveled along the Great Road. Hidden down the hill in between Main and Water was a small sidestreet named Troopers Alley. Stepping out the back doors from those Main Street hotels into the Alley, men could find dens of “evil fame,” gambling, and strong ale. Like those establishments, the intense hop bill of this American-style IPA will tempt you with citrus aroma and bitterness. A discrete malt bill of 2-row Pale Malt forms the backbone and a blend of Crystal/Caramel 40 is added for slight sweetness and color to draw you in to the varied hop experience. Simcoe and Columbus hops added throughout the boil provide an alluring bitterness. An enticing blend of Columbus, Amarillo, Simcoe, Cascade, and Centennial balances the bitterness with a fragrant aroma and pleasing finish. 135 IBUs, 9 SRM, 5.9% ABV, American pale, Crystal and Caramel 40 malts. Columbus, Amarillo, Simcoe, Cascade, and Centennial hops.

Trooper’s Alley IPA pours a medium copper with a small head of white bubbles that leaves a nice lace. Nose is spruce hops with a hint of citrus. Taste is crisp hop happiness with a nice tantalizing orange zest kiss. Body is fizzy but not overpoweringly so.

Pours a clear golden orange from the can with minimal ring of off-white head. Aroma is nice west coast hops with a hint of pale malt. Taste follows, kind of a creamy oat mouth. Light carbonation, well balanced. Solid beer.

Poured as a 2 oz sampler at Virginia Beer Live 2013. Red dark amber color, aroma of lemon. Grapefruit, pinesol, lemon taste. A bit too hoppy.

From the tap at the brewery came a golden copper brew wih a nice, thin white head. Aromas or grapefruit, cat piss, and stink foot. Medium/full bodied with flavors of malt, grapefruit, and a lingering hop finish.

Tap. Copper with thin head and light lacing. Fresh piney, grape fruity, caramelly smell. Nice light hoppy flavor, blossoming into a fuller hop flavor. Clean, nice bitter finish.

On tap at the Cellar in Blacksburg twice in last month. Solid American style IPA on the dry and low alcohol side of the street. A nice sessionable IPA in the piney-dryer style. I like this one quite a bit.

Sample at Mellow Mushroom in Johnson City. The beer pours a slightly hazy orange color with a medium thin off-white head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of hops, citrus and malt. Light-bodied with a moderately bitter hops character and flavors of grapefruit and toasted malt. The finish is hoppy with a short fruity aftertaste. Decent overall.

Poured on draft at the Cellar in Blacksburg, VA. Pours a nice hazy orange with a white head of foam. The aroma is pretty piny with some citrus persuasion. Taste is bitter and piney with a sweeter middle and finish. Nice spritzy mouthfeel.

On tap at The Cellar Blacksburg Va. Pours clear gold with a decent white head. Pine & citrus hop aroma. Nicely bitter, long finish. Good solid IPA that I could session anytime.
