Pours a hazy yellow colour with a patchy white head. Aroma of sour green apples, grapefruit and orange. Flavour of similar elements with some spicy notes. Medium bodied with a light bitter, citrusy sour finish. Refreshing. Summery brew.

Edullinen pullo Bierkompassista. Ensimmäinen tämän oluttyylin olut minulle. Kaadettuna pitkään Franziskaner lasiin olut on keltainen ja samea. Wöllnitzer on hedelmäinen, kirpeä ja hapan olut. Mielestäni tämä muistuttaa paljon lambic-tyyliä. Pidin tästä.

In short: A superb light and very tart Berliner Weisse with a touch of funk and a touch fo smoke. Wow!
How: Bottle 500ml. Exact age unknown, probably not very old. Tasting session with Montreal crew
The look: Clear yellow-blonde body topped by a white ring of foam
In long: Nose is a bit funky (more so than I am used in a Berliner Weisse), moderately acidic and a bit smoky (something I am not used to in a barley wine). An original an intriguing aroma for sure. Taste is crisp, citrusy, light wheaty notes, very tart, moderately acidic and a tiny little bit smoky. The body is light but not watery by any means, at least considering this is a 2.5% beer. Writing that this beer is refreshing and very much sessionnable would be just stating the obvious and would only serve the purpose to make my rating longer so that most people will just accept my high score as a proof that the beer is good because with such a long rating I must know what I’m talking about but the length of rating will not fool those who read a long rating until the end although I really doubt that someone can have so little to do with his life that he reads gibberish like this until the end.

6 Gently sharp acidity immediately on opening, mellowed out with a touch of coriandery wheat later.
3 Cloudy yellow, brief head after an initial gush on opening.
7 Slightly chemical retronasals, but beautiful clean lemony acidity in the mouth. Later taste plenty wheaty too.
4 Crisp palate, tartly acidic, lively carbonation. Finish tingles with a puckering dry sharpness, but does have reasonable light grain wheatiness too.
13 A berliner weisse with balls - treat it with respect. And for pity’s sake don’t add cordial or syrup to this. Rerate: 500ml bottle (HBF2011)
Fuller in almost every respect, bumping scores a bit (7:3+:7:4:14=3.5)

Bottle (4,5%). Golden, hazy, small and fully diminishing head. Moderate and malty, sour and dry aroma, lots citrus and green apples, light hoppyness. Body is light to medium, malty and dry flavor, very sour, green apples and citrus. Finish is average, malty and dry, sour. Interesting and unusual Weisse – reminds me of lambic.

bottle from Bierkompass. Cloudy pale colour, large white head. Sour nose. Sour, geuze-like with a good sharpness and tartness about. Lingering finish with a touch of dry hops.

UPDATED: OCT 3, 2012 My Bottom Line:
Lacto funk, snappy wheat and a citrusy lime and green apple splash come together beautifully in this Berliner Weisse, developing plenty of sourness and refreshment.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the misty hay blond.
-Watery passages are felt, which is normal at 2.5%. This is obviously quite quenching.
-The fruit character effortlessly evolves from citrus fruit to green apples.
-The effervescent carbonation remains soft on the palate.
-This is just so perfect in summer.
-There’s a slightly phenolic undercurrent that works with the lactic acidity and citrusy refreshment.
-If this were labeled ’Russian River’, it would get rave reviews.
-This more rustic than, say, the very professional Bayerischer Bahnhof Berliner-style Weisse.

Appearance : clear pale yellow with a small head.
Aroma : Awesome citrusy tartness, nice wheat with a light lactic kick. Light funk. Not too much wheat for my taste.
Taste : Great tartness and nice wheat. Great finish. Very light smoke maybe. Light phenolic finish. Light mineral.
Overall : Awesome beer. I’m in love with the style and this one is a very nice example. I like that the wheat is more subdue than in the Bruery one for example. I also like the light lactic and funk. Only downside is the light rubbery phenols on the finish. I was very sad at the end of my glass...

UPDATED: NOV 14, 2010 500 ml bottle into tulip. Pours pale straw, somewhat hazy effervescent body topped by meringue white, rather short lived head. Aroma is sour & fruity with flowery character, barnyard funk and light malty sweetness penetrating through. Showing less diversity than the aroma profile, flavor is dominated by lemony sourness with salty sensation (probably due to acidity) and some vinegar. The multilayered sourness doesn’t seem to be derived solely from addition of Lactobacillus. No malts or hoppy bitterness to speak of. Light bodied, highly carbonated and dry the beer is almost champagne like and lively on the palate. Not to my liking but nicely matching the requirements of the style.
