This festive German lager is traditionally brewed at the end of the winter brewing season and then lagered/stored cold during the summer months, to be released to adoring fans in September just in time for the season’s festivities. Our take our this classic style spends months fermenting until it finally adopts the soft, complex, and elegant character it is known for.

Tap at the brewery. Clear copper pour with a small head that fades to a messy ring. Aromas are dark bread, nuts, earth, wood, and red fruit. Like sweetness in the taste. Pretty malty with a good amount of grainy dark bread, nuts, and dried fruit. Light caramel and wood as well. Thin to medium body. Decent marzen.

22 oz draft on tap at the tap room (Ann Arbor, MI). Enjoyed my time here for the Hawkeyes game. Pours a deeper dark copper pour, darker fringe and chestnut browns in the middle, faint haziness but really almost transparent. A frothy tannish head atop dies to a decent layer, laces a bit and sticks around. Good lacing. Aromas are a bit toasty and biscuity, some bready and biscuity malt elements provide some life, faint kiss of red fruit, toasty malts and a gentle spiciness, earthy hopping. Initial shows a decent body, still pretty drinkable with some bready and biscuity malt life. Gentle spicy and earthy hop feel starts to grow a bit. Some toastiness, firmer body as we hit the middle. That dried fruit feel is subtle, compliments the base bready and toasty malt element. Backend is a bit carmelized, spicy hop profile kicks in a little better to give some counterbalance. I’d like to see a firmer hopping on the backend, but as it stands this certainly works. Bready and biscuity elements taper out into the finish meeting that spicy and mellow earthy hop life. Ok.

On tap at the brewpub. Aroma was plain amber malt. Unfortunately, this was boring. It completely lacked the vibrant, fresh Munich malt complexity I really want out of it. The body seemed thin and pined for the denseness and crispness of a decoction mash, traditional German lager. Soppy and wet.
