3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask conditioned - handpump - Malt Shovel Northampton A black beer with a white head. A slightly sweet milky aroma with smoke and seaweed. The taste is similar and there is some saltiness too. It is really nice in a Foreign Stout sort of way .

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A black coloured beer with reddish tinges and a frothy off white to beige coloured head. A roasted malt aroma, slightly dusty and smoky, plus a hint of spice. Dry mouthfeel. A bittersweet roasted malt taste, dry biscuity, nutty and cereal malt, then a sweet caramel dried fruit flavour comes through to temper the bitterness. The finish is dry and malty.

2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Very black without a head. This is a more noticeable stout in its aroma, that does include a mild roasted character. However there is a clear fusion of hops here that makes it stuck somewhere between a stout and a black IPA and gives is an odder taste with floral elements.

Bottle from Tesco, pours a lovely near-black, with a coffee-coloured head. Nose vis a bit of roasted coffee and a hint of chocolate, but also a musty metallic tang. The strong metallic taste eased off a bit once the chill lifted - why on earth does it say "serve slightly chilled" on the label? - but was still present, along with a more pleasing bitter dry cocoa flavour and notes of coffee and old wine. I hope this was just a slightly duff bottle.

Cask, half-pint at Doggett’s Coat & Badge. Dark as the November eve in London. Spotty lacing,no head. Dark chocolate malts to the nose, well roasted. Flavoured with chocolate malts, prunes, dark fruits and coffee leading to a roasted bitter ending. Medium bodied. A fine partner to my food (London, 02.11.2012).

Very dark and very dry. Unlike some bitter stouts however, the taste profile holds up throughout the mouth, not leaving a gap as in some examples. I prefer a hint of sweetness or caramel in my stouts, but as an example of its type, this isn’t bad.

Out of the barrel at the 2009 Great British Beer Festival. Black with a tan head only from the gravity, roast malt with a hint of bitter chocolate, coffee & raisins. A bit thin for a stout but quite pleasant.
