Lightly hazy golden ale with a thick off-white head. Rather pleasant apple cider aroma. Dryish malts with light hops, but some oxidation marks. Lighter bodied.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 DeepBlack (386) - Derby, Derbyshire, ENGLAND - JAN 31, 2005
Straight from the Cask at the Burton Winter Beer Festival on Sat 29th Jan.
A nice "country" style bitter. Elements of hay, cut grass & fruits in there.
Quite dry & pleasantly hoppy.
2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 7/20 argo0 (10388) - Washington DC, USA - JAN 26, 2005
(bottle, Gyle No. L37) Lightly hazed copper with minimal off-white head. Aroma is moderately sweet, alcohol (sherry/port), grape, orange, melon. Taste is mild up top, then turns fruity before finishing with that same sherry/port flavor. Watery light body. Based on other descriptions, I would guess that this beer has gone stale from age, but I have no idea for certain given that I have no idea what a Gyle number is, nor can I find any info on the brewery website.

(Bottle) Cloudy amber body with a high sediment level. Nose if that of oxidation, very apple sauce like. Malty flavour with tones of hops, alcohol and mild bitterness. Seemed to be past its prime. Thanks for the offering Lubiere.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 maeib (7542) - Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, ENGLAND - SEP 22, 2004
UPDATED: AUG 28, 2012 Cask conditioned - handpump - Malt Shovel Northampton. On its day this is a beautiful cask ale full of delicate hops. Sadly today was not its day! A golden colour with a slight haze. The hops are there but unfortunately too much diacetyl leading to a butterscotch nose and taste. It was still tasty but it should be more floral and hoppy.Score 3.1 Subsequent ratings scored 3.2 and 3.3. Average becomes 3.2
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 johndoughty (3286) - cheslyn hay, West Midlands, ENGLAND - AUG 31, 2004
In its cask form this once won the CAMRA beer of the year award. You can see why. Lovely hoppy aroma when you open it followed by a wonderful flowey bitterness. The taste reaches all parts of your mouth. I wasn’t expecting such a range of flavours from a 3.8 per center but this is truely an excellent beer.
1.3 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 4/20 hotstuff (3340) - Indiana, USA - AUG 15, 2004
Bottle. Poured a very, very small white head with small-large sized bubbles that fully diminished. Transparent, uncarbonated and an orange hue. Yucky aroma - reminded me of someone having sweaty feet. Gross! Lightly bitter flavor. Smooth, dry, watery and thin mouthfeel. Light bodied beer with very sparse lacing.
1.5 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20 thedm (4773) - Fort Wayne, USA - AUG 15, 2004
This bottled brew poured a small head of quickly diminishing medium sized white colored bubbles that left behind a poor lacing, The body was uncarbonated transparent and orange brown in color. The aroma was like sweaty socks ugh! The mouth feel was thin and mildly bitter with an off hop malt taste. The flavor was thin malty and mildly bitter.
