4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 fbennett (293) - Portland, Oregon, USA - APR 27, 2006
Poured from a black bottle with a small description of #21 with a wood barrel. It pours a creamy brown with some yeast floating around that leaves a small tan head that disappates quickly. The aroma is strong upfront with caramel, plum, peaches, grapes, cherry, and a alcohal buttery sweetness. The taste is smooth very sweet, malty with a slight vinos feel. A very fruity up front feel on the palate followed by honey, wheat, and a balancing hop essence. And finishes bready, sticky, with a syrupy feel on throat.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 jimbowood (1036) - Freeport, Georgia, USA - NOV 11, 2006
Bottle. How is this beer not rated any higher? As good as any American made quad that I’ve tried and the oak aging adds so much complexity. I really liked this beer. Oak adds a tobacco flavor to this caramel dominated, slightly smokey brew.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 jimhilt (2273) - Bow, New Hampshire, USA - MAY 17, 2006
Pours a two finger, light brown head that slowly fades to a ring leaving a no lace. Cloudy amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Malty nose. Starts sweet, raisin/plum complex flavor really, hints of sweet alcohol, smooth finish. Pricey - $6.95 for a 375ml bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 sebletitje (5416) - Enghien, BELGIUM - JAN 11, 2009
courtesy of Vasdef42 for this excellent beer.
Bottle is not showing it brewed by LeftHand but by Indian Peaks Brewing in CO.
Pours hazy amber with tan head, and light golden lacing.
Aroma has very sweet notes of oak wood and is loaded with dark fruits.
Taste of light oak chips and vanilla, overall oak presence became more noticeable as the beer warmed up. There are also some nice addition of molasses, toffee and caramel malts as well as sugary notes.
The beer is dominated by strong dark fruits - cherries / plums - with the oak in the background.
One amazing brew, two thumbs up.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 BrockLanders (759) - Panama City, Florida, USA - JAN 26, 2006
UPDATED: SEP 30, 2006 Forgot about this one...on tap at Falling Rock, GABF ’05. Dark brown, small tannish head. Fruity...malty nose, some raisin and yeastiness. Flavor was sweet also, an abundance of funk, sweet malts, alcohol, sugary toffee, etc. Not many folks at the table liked this, but I thought it was pretty ok. Didn’t think of it as a quad...seemed way to thin in the mouthfeel and depth/complexity for that. Not great, but one I enjoyed. RERATE, Sep 2006 at Falling Rock. Sampled two bottles with the David Watson (lived in Woodville, FL..the brew’s namesake). Poured a deep translucent mahogany, smallish off-white head. Nose is alcohol, deep maltiness, dark fruits, oaky. Flavor is superb....reminds you of NC Old Stock, but with a big woody edge. As it warms it just gets better and better. Thanks Dave for the treat....this brew has really aged nicely and taken on new dimensions. The original rating is going way up!
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 mensch (187) - Loveland, Colorado, USA - OCT 4, 2010
Very dark copper colored, thin white head - almost flat. Sweet-sour and fruity-sherry aroma. Not too thick and not at all cloying like other beers of this weight. Big fruity sweet middle, much like a barley wine, a little pleasing sour character and very dry finish. The oak melds well. I don’t think this beer belongs in the quad category, maybe a separate barrel-aged category wood (pun intended) be better. [Indian Peaks Brewing Co is the original name of Left Hand]
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Numenor (871) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - DEC 1, 2006
Ruby body with no head. Sweet aroma, tea and spice. Taste is delicate, cinamon, spice with wheat and honey. Cool and clean ending, a very nice beer.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Beaver (1061) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JUL 8, 2006
UPDATED: OCT 13, 2006 375ml bottle corked and caged. Pours a murky ruby light brown with a fizzy tan head that quickly dissipates.
The aroma is vinous alcohol, wood, tart fruits and some floral notes.
The flavor is sweet breadiness, oak and some tart fruits. The finish is sweet with some dark fruits (figs). The alcohol is well hidden. The mouthfeel is full bodied and smooth with some slightly sharp carbonation.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this. It’s a nice Belgian Ale (a little on the sweet side) with a good use of wood aging.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 JoeMcPhee (7622) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 25, 2007
Deep dark amber beer with a thin head. Aroma is very sweet and chewy with a heavy fruity sweetness. Light vanilla and woodiness. There is a heavy caramel and brown sugar sweetness with a heavy plumminess. Candied fruit, soft toffee and a bit of spiciness. The yeast is fairly subdued though without a great deal of contribution to the otherwise lovely malt bill in here. It strikes me as more of a barley wine than a quad.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 jzzbassman (1362) - New Albany, Mississippi, USA - NOV 2, 2005
Poure very dark brown with a tan head with a greenish caste that faded to nothing with no lacing. Vanilla was very evident in te nose, with some cake like odors. Flavor was sweet fruitcake, vanilla, and wood, with a sweet malt back and a smooth finish, if somewhat thin. I’m surprised at the alcohol content in this as it was not there in the flavor. Pretty good if overpriced for what it is.
