Dark Day refers to an event that occurred on May 19, 1780, when an unusual darkening of the day sky was observed over the New England states and parts of Canada. The darkness was so complete that candles were required from noon on." Dark Day IPA is a collaboration with Dave Richardson from Gardner Ale House. Herbal hop aroma is complimented with roasted malt character. American de-husked roasted barley does not lend a bitter acrid flavor but imparts a roasted character that melds with low level caramelized malts. Big herbal, citrus hop flavors and bitterness clash with roasted and mildly sweet malt. Try Dark Day IPA and then drive to Gardner to try its sister brew Nightcrawler IPA.

Black pour. Aroma is earthy, chocolate, coffee and dome mild hops. Taste is mostly coffee and roastef malts. Hops come through a bit. More like a porter but still good. A bit thin but still had a velvety feel. Overall descent brew.

Bottle. Pours a clear brown body with a nice one inch frothy off-white head that faded very slowly. The nose is a very pleasing and well balanced mix of chocolate and lightly roasted malts over a bright and fairly citrusy hoppiness. I really like the nose, thereís a great slightly sweet milk chocolate and light roast coffee quality to it that really smells tasty. The flavor isnít as well developed as the aroma implied. The sweet chocolate notes donít come across quite as well, itís more dry with a bit of an acrid roastiness thatís enhanced by the brashness of the hops. The hop mix is just one that doesnít do it for me with the nice maltiness thatís going on here. Light to medium bodied with a soft fizzy active carbonation level. Lingering bitter hops on the finish. Started out pretty nice, but overall, not a big fan of this one.

Bottle shared with family on Marthaís Vineyard, MA. Pours dark, red-brown with a thick, creamy beige cap. Nose is heav on the roast and heavy on the pine and grapefruit. Medium to big sweet falvor with medium roasted malts, strong bitterness of grapefruit, heady pine, grass. Also some modest dark chocolate, earth and burnt toast. Medium to full bodied with average, creamy carbonation. Quite resinous on the finish with strong roasted malt character, some charred toast, lasting pine, grass and ripe grapefruit. There are some hints of tropical fruits lingering behind the roast and pine. A good bit of depth here. Overall, a very solid black IPA. I like it.

A bit underwhelming. Hops very understated, more of a thin porter than a Black IPA. Given the other respectable reviews (and my experience with their IPA), I wonder if the bottle is off -- aroma is not bad, just empty, poured well. Who knows.

on tap-pours mahogany and a light brown head that laces. Aroma is roasty medium/dark malt, resin. Taste is resin/orange hops with some bite, roasty medium/dark malt. Soft carbonation, towards medium body.

Pours deep mahogany into a Sam glass. Tan micro head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Sweet earthy caramel, roasted coffee and toasted pumpernickel aromas. Dry and thin with dark smoky chocolate upfront turning to bitter earthy resin in the lasting finish.

Poured from bottle. (Draught) Pours a dark brown body with a medium beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, citrus, grass, and burnt grain. Flavor of roasted malt, citrus, caramel, stone fruit, and pine. Dark brown body almost black with solid tan head. Aroma was a little weak, roasted nose with some fresh piney and grassy notes from hops. Flavor was well balanced. High roasted character with a complex hop blend of citrus and piney. Aftertaste was a little short lived, would have liked the hoppiness to have lasted a little longer, but a quality beer nonetheless.
