Production moved from White Shield brewery to William Worthington’s brewery in December 2010. Prodiuction moved to the main Coors brewery in Burton in 2012 to keep up with increasing demand.
Ingredients: Halcyon barley, from the northern part of Norfolk; Sugar; Northdown and Challenger hops - including a hop extract; and a two-strain yeast supplied by Bass.
"It has a clean, fresh flavour and full bodied, balanced bitterness." Michael Jackson.
An iconic India Pale Ale (IPA) brewed to the same recipe as 1830. Aromatic hops, toasted cereal notes and hints of smoke and spice kindle White Shield’s embracing nose, enhanced by fragrant fruity characters and an intricate top-note of freshly baked bread. With time to condition, William Worthington’s unique dual yeast works up a sharp sparkle, crafting a full luxurious mouth-feel that combines with warming hints of alcoholic liqueur and White Shield’s ever so subtle peppery character, to create an exquisite bittersweet finish.

More of an English pale ale. Bottle from LCBO. A bit cheese in aroma, and gummy in taste. Still, smooth and a hoppy finish.Thicker mouthfeel.

NWAF 25 Jan 13. Gyldenbrun. 0 skum. God aroma av mørk frukt. Smaken er syrlig frukt. Litt pepper. Behagelig. Blir litt søt - så syrlig igjen. Avslutter tørt. Innholdsrikt.

500 mL bottle. Definitely a solid, well constructed beer, but not what I expected from the iconic British IPA. I had imagined that it would be stronger, hoppier (in a British way), a little rougher around the edges. What this is is a well balanced, moderately hopped, very drinkable beer. Nothing wrong with it at all.

This is a classic, the last tangible connection to 1800’s IPA in the sense that it has been made continually since then. Good, natural English flavours, with the mineral note many English pale ales have especially connected to Burton (although Wells IPA, say, shows a similar trait). I must say too it is consistent, reminding me a lot of the one I first tasted in the 1980’s (except then it seemed to have a more pronounced banana note, almost Belgian). I like and respect it but I wish the hop rate was higher and somehow I’d guess it was a lot higher in the 1820’s. But we should be glad it is still here.

Poured copper-amber, clear with carbonation, and good slightly yellow head that lasted very well. Aroma sought me before I sampled directly; malty and almost balanced by spicy hops, inviting. Taste a wall of malts blending to robust hopps bitterness, the right amount for a classic/true IPA. Finish is very long and clean, medium bodied, mouthfeel reminds me of english bitter. Very nice and honest beer.

Bottle Morrisons. Hazy orange amber colour foamy white head slight lacing. Aroma is weak hops. Taste is well balanced some malts with spicy hop bitter finish. Medium body quite strong carbonation. Ok but no where near enough hops for me in an IPA and too much carbonation.

Very good IPA, a little more malt and a little les hop than my personal preference.

Appearance: beer is a hazy copper to amber hue, has a very large beige head that settles into a nice density that towers above the glass Aroma: bread, kind of faint, almost some licorice, Taste: very subtle malt, very subtle all around until the finish which is bitter and with a pepper spice Palate: very light mouthfeel, too light for this type of beer, lively carbonation, bitter aftertaste Overall: not one of my favorite ipa's, pretty bland all around ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
