COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned; occasionally on cask.
Production moved from White Shield brewery to William Worthington’s brewery in December 2010. Prodiuction moved to the main Coors brewery in Burton in 2012 to keep up with increasing demand.
Ingredients: Halcyon barley, from the northern part of Norfolk; Sugar; Northdown and Challenger hops - including a hop extract; and a two-strain yeast supplied by Bass.
"It has a clean, fresh flavour and full bodied, balanced bitterness." Michael Jackson.
An iconic India Pale Ale (IPA) brewed to the same recipe as 1830. Aromatic hops, toasted cereal notes and hints of smoke and spice kindle White Shield’s embracing nose, enhanced by fragrant fruity characters and an intricate top-note of freshly baked bread. With time to condition, William Worthington’s unique dual yeast works up a sharp sparkle, crafting a full luxurious mouth-feel that combines with warming hints of alcoholic liqueur and White Shield’s ever so subtle peppery character, to create an exquisite bittersweet finish.

At GBBF in London. Cask. Amber, a bit hoppy. A beer a forgot as soon as I tasted it.

500 ml bottle. 345. BB 10/Dec/14. From bierzwerg.de.
Lively clear orangey red colour with a small creamy off-white head. The aroma is malt and mild floral hops. Rather mild it is. The flavour is much stronger. There’s floral and resin hops, perfume, some sweetness, some bitterness and maltiness. The bitterness is quite strong for an English IPA. Unfortunately it’s not that pleasant. Something almost smoked or burned there too. Lacks the freshness. Hmmm... not my favourite.

Was surprised how poor and indistinctive this was. Some body and flavour, but proof of how poor Worthington beer has become.

Cloudy light brown amber with a big foamy head. Fruity, lightly spiced aroma. Malty sweet up front then moves to resiny bitterness and a quick dry finish. Full bodied and slippery on the palate. Can’t stress enough not to drink this one ice cold, the difference is night and day.

Foggy bright orange in color with a pinkish white head. Soft mouthfeel, pale in flavor. Simple, well balanced and almost fruity.

Bottle from Bierzwerg, Greven. Pours clear dark amber with a big creamy off-white head. Aroma of citrussy hops, wood, leather. Taste is moderate bitter, fruity and resiny, wood and with a nice malty background. Lingering fresh bitter, also noticeable spices at finish, good.

On tap at the National Brewery Centre
This sample was much better than the red shield. It’s still not a great beer but at least if I had to choose between the three options this one would be drinkable past a half pint. Get it on tap if you can.

Aroma / Appearance - The amber base and skittish head provide the base for thick white legs. Muted caramel, stale oranges, and then malt drive home an IPA that is about as far from a hop bomb as you can get while not being off.

Flavor / Palate - The mouthfeel is thick and chewy. Sweet sips of glazed cheesecake tickle the palate before a dry malty finish. This is far less hop forward than I expected for an IPA but if it is brewed to a historic recipe I can see why. It’s probably the best of the Worthington lineup (that I have tried).

1 pint .9 fl oz bottle: Aroma is got a pretty nice alcohol note right off the bat, grainya sweet almost cough drop note, a big vanilla note upfront. This made me think that this was oak aged, and a bit of fruit notes. Appearance is golden with some light amber lacing and a thick white head that lingers around for quite a while. Taste is pretty clean, nicely balanced hop and malt textures, a bit complex on the palate. Taste is interesting because it goes through phases. Nice! I really enjoyed this one! Cheers!

Dobre i ciekawe IPA z Anglii. Piana kremowa i trwala. Kolor bursztynowy, a zapach orzechowo-migdalowy. W smaku zas bardzo tresciwe gozkie i wytrawne z lekka nuta slodyczy w tle. Ciekawe polaczenie i kombinacja smakow. Oszczedna etykieta ale ogolnie piwo jest dobre.

an odd import found at a shop. Its a pretty beer with its clear red color and well nice fluffy white head. Aroma is butter grainy rolls and just a bit of flowers hidden in there. The taste is a mineral and caramel mix. I like the real ale texture of it though that saves this mostly standard offering. Odd how mild the hoppiness is in this IPA. Guess im a spoiled american in that regard.

Poured this from liter bottle. Had a "best before" date of a year from now. Weird. Amber red pour with a lot of white head. Earthy malt aroma. Very uniques taste. Bitter, grainy, cereal, spicy, yet somewhat floral taste. Wasn't what unexpected. Average but drinkable beer
