There UBS no bacon in this beer. Repeat, there is no bacon in this beer, just the power of association. This is a traditional German Rauchbier where 60% of the grist is Beech wood-smoked barley. Beech wood is commonly used for smoking pork, thus the association with bacon; light to medium body, fairly low hoppiness, and a great smoked aroma pair perfectly with meats and meat alternatives. Prosit!

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear amber with an orange tinge under a small white head. Big smoke and campfire. Medium bodied, sweet and full of smoke. Lingering throughout, big smoke into the finish. A touch fruity throughout, but nice and smoky.

Draught. This is a fairly smokey brew with a little more nuance than I have experienced with other smoked brews.

Atlanta, Ga. - on tap at the brewpub. Nice dark copper pour, thin, but sticky off-white head that leaves a bit of lacing. Smoked sardines aroma, a but of peat. Flavor is solid, but not overpowering. Smooth smokey notes - some smoked meat, some underlying caramel sweetness in the back end, not overpowering or offensive. Mouthfeel is thick enough. This would be a good Rauch for those new to the style and just want to get their feet wet before moving on to some of the bolder offerings.

Amber color with a white head. Aroma is smokey with some bacon and ham along with caramel. Flavor also contains a buffet of smoked meat with some caramel and toffee. Medium bodied so drinkable but intense flavor. Nice beer.

UPDATED: JAN 20, 2014 I tried this in a flight, and it was definitely different than any beer I?ve tasted before. I could see drinking it with barbecue, because it has such a strong smoky flavor to it. Overall I thought it was nicely done for what it was, just not my personal preference. I would have difficulty drinking a 16 oz glass of this beer.

8 oz. pour at the Brewpub. Clear gold color with a small, off-white frothy head. Sharp, smoked meat aroma (bacon, hickory, barbeque leap to mind), light resin and a hint of milk or cream. Very sweet, lightly spicy, and very lightly hopped. Light to medium body, sticky, and chewy. Overall, this is a surprisingly balanced and delicious rauchbier. More drinkable than most Iíve had. Well done!

Comes out of the tap a pretty, slightly hazy amber with a thin but fine-bubbled eggshell head. Malty aroma has a decided overtone of beech - it does smell a little like bacon (and Iím a vegetarian!) and has a subtle note of hard candy. Beechwood dominates the malty flavor - interesting and distinctive, doesnít do much for me, but thatís just me. I get a hint or two of fruit, smoke and hops as well. Texture is firm, almost syrupy, though fizz is none too strong. If you like beech (and bacon) you may like this one.
