Bah Humbug is a 6% abv brew using not just the traditional malted barley and hops, but also a big sprinkling of cinnamon. The effect of the cinnamon is to give a spicy, almost banana-like flavour as often found on German wheat beers; and this blends with the sweet-honeyed flavours of the Maris Otter barley to create a beer with all the fruit flavours of mince pies, Christmas Pudding and Christmas cake all rolled into one.

Appearance: Dark copper with ruby highlights. Frothy white head, which doesn’t last. Effervescence visible. Aroma: Toasty nutty caramel, clove or cinnamom and some prune or raisin in the background. Flavour: Not too much depth in terms of the malt profile, but some sweetness that is a little cloying. Could either do with some more roasty flavours or some more hop bitterness to balance the sweetness. Definitely hints of Christmas fruit cake or pudding. Mouthfeel: Not as much body as I was hoping for, but I may have been expecting something more akin to a porter. finish is quick with a slight warming aftertaste (but not something that makes me want to drink a case of it!) Overall: As a big fan of the Wychwood guys’ beer, a bit underwhelmed with this. The Hobgoblin Reserve is a better option.

Spicy malt on the aroma, a smooth taste, with an almost cola like finish, nothing special, but you can’t expect much at £1.25 from aldi.

(bottle) Clear, dark amber to chestnut colour with a firm, medium-sized and tanned foamy head. Juicy malty aroma with notes of caramel, marmalade, a whiff of cinnamon, nutty accents and fruity hops. Sweet and discreetly bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a soft carbonation. Initially mildly nutty cara-malty taste with a bearable touch of cinnamon and a fruity hoppy background; sweet and delicately bitter finish with notes of toffee and cinnamon. Okay for a Winter-spice beer on a hot summer night. 31.VIII.15

Old rating. 500 ml bottle from Old Town. Clear amber with a modest off-white head that lingers a little bit. Aromas of ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon with some biscuit and toffee notes as well. Taste is more of the same with a watery body. Taste is kind of spice cabinet with some malty sweetness. Not enough body I guess. Easy drinking though.

Pours a clear reddish-amber with a decent khaki head that settles to a thin film leaving tiny spots of lace. Nose involves rich caramel and toffee malt, light English yeast vinegar character, some toasty, cherries and dates, and brown sugar. Fairly sweet, fairly bitter. Medium to full bodied, creamy, soft, somewhat oily, with a toasty yeasty finish. Good brew, drinkable out of season. Perhaps a bit basic, but nothing wrong with that.

Christmas gift. Dark ruby hues. Aroma of spice and honey. Weird metal flavour with slight cinnamon and rich caramel. Not really bad but not what it could be.

Caramel aroma with notes of cinnamon and dried figs. Clear amber colour. Sweet front with brief and light bitter finish; flavour of dried fruits, heavy caramel, and honey. Medium body with mild carbonation. Pleasant enough.

The art really luring me in, I bought two bottles of these. The first I had alone on Christmas Eve, really trying to get into a miserly "Bah Humbug" sort of deportment. It was unremarkable, but here goes the review of the second. I always find Wychwood beers to be quite handsome, this being no deviation. Ruby copper with an off white cap that coats the glass, brown bread, caramel, subtle spices and hints of leather form the scent. One sip marks a big cinnamon and ginger blast, some flowery hops, light fruitcake full of candies and breadiness. The body is where this brewery’s beers seem to suffer and Bah Humbug, this one does too. A watery feeling I can’t get past, especially in something that I wish had some full feel to back it up. This is definitely drinkable, even enjoyable in a strange tasting way, however I would refrain from repeat wassailing with this one.
