3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 ricke (476) - Malme, SWEDEN - NOV 18, 2009
Serving date: 2009-01-09.
Served in snifter.
500 ml bottle. Freshness date on label (Best before 2009-08-26). Artwork on label looks like it’s inspired by a Tim Burton movie, and says "Spell binding stout".
A black - almost opaque - and thick brew. Head is small, caramel/tan colored and dissipates quickly. Some lacings clings onto the glass.
The smell is first and foremost of roasted barley and coffee. Some hints of licorice are also present.
The most prominent flavor is definitely strong, almost burnt, coffee. It is really reminiscent of coffee that has been kept heated a little too long, although more pleasant. When disaggregated the characteristics are of course roasted malts and coffee flavors. Some notes of licorice are present as well. Chocolate flavors, that are so often prominent in stouts, are there but not very evident. Slight bitterness in the finish. I think I would have liked a little more complex character and stronger flavors overall.
I would say this is a full-bodied beer, but compared to other stouts (which often has higher ABV-levels) perhaps it should be conceived of as medium-bodied instead.
I really like stouts. This is definitely not the most interesting or complex stout out there, but with 5% ABV this would be an excellent session beer. It goes down really easy, so drinkability is high.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BeerChaser0078 (909) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - NOV 17, 2009
Bottle. Pours pretty much jet black with a large creamy tan head that lasts ages and leaves lots of lacing. Aroma is of roasted malt, vanilla, caramel, dark chocolate and a hint of coffee. Flavour has strong notes of roasted malt and dark chocolate up front with milky caramel at the back. Light to medium body, slightly thin mouthfeel with sweetness coming first and some lingering bitterness on the finish. Overall a nice stout, easy to drink but not particularly special in any way.
2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Case (107) - GERMANY - NOV 12, 2009

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 mcdav2154 (436) - GERMANY - OCT 31, 2009
Pours a black body with a medium beige head. Although the head isn’t that big, it’s very thick and laces great. Smell is of coffee and some chocolate but too subdued. Taste is the same with stronger notes of chocolate in the aftertaste and a clean bitterness at the end. Pretty good stout but I wish it was a bit thicker in the mouthfeel with a stronger aroma.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Demise (57) - Wellington, NEW ZEALAND - OCT 30, 2009
Pours black with ruby edging and a tan head. Strong chocolate aromas, with dark malt and a touch of coffee. Tastes incredibly dark and rich - dark roasted malt, a little burnt, rich coffee flavours and a hint of dark chocolate. A bitter finish, a little fizzy on the palate but very smooth otherwise. Nice, very nice.
2.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 Nisse666 (3162) - Göteborg, SWEDEN - OCT 23, 2009
ES: påtaglig men lite enkel eftersmak
PS1: Köp en Guinness i stället den häxa kan fara till blåkulla
PS2: Systemb. plocka in något annat istället!
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Pinball (9672) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - OCT 19, 2009
pours dark brown, with a smooth brown head.
aroma of roasted malts, faint licorice, faint dark fruits, faint coffee . aroma is very mild and very weak. appears to be complex though.
flavor is roasted malts primarily, some notes of dark fruits, some coffee, some sugary sweetness like milk caramel. flavor is a bit stronger than aroma, but still a bit mild or weak. in some strange way this one reminds me of guinness reg. to flavor. Nice session beer i’m sure.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 sound67 (223) - Offenbach, GERMANY - OCT 8, 2009
50cl bottle, dark brown with fanciful light blue label. Pitch-black, impenetrable colour, small creamy beige head. Faint aroma of roasted malt and some chocolate. Low carbonation, slightly creamy mouthfeel, but a bit thinner than some other stouts. Roasted malts dominate the taste, with some dark chocolate on the side. Rather more bitter than some. Dark chocolate and coffee finish. Chocolat-y after taste, nevertheless. To me, this stout strikes me as a bit lighter-bodied, not as full and creamy. But the taste is very much all right. Sessionable stout.
