3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 tombyars (1210) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - MAR 12, 2012
First tasted this infamous named ale at the Mossend Hotel Beer Festival, Lochwinnoch in July 1994. Cask, handpump dispense. Pale copper red in colour with a large foamy white head. Powerful aroma of sweet malt and hops. Good vibrant mouthfeel leads to a full bodied robust flavour. Pale malts evident with spicy digestive biscuit base combined with redcurrant fruit. Smooth toffee notes linger in the warming aftertaste, along with a slight aromatic hop dryness. A good example of an English strong ale in the same mold as Gale\’s HSB. Knew one landlady who covered up a certain part of the pumpclip picture with a sticky label!!

Cask conditioned Handpump Racehorse Northampton. A golden beer with a white head and lacing. Citrussy peachy notes in the aroma with as hint of spoiling rubber. It’s the same in the mouth. Hard to tell if this is due to the pub or the brewery- both have their flaws. A reasonable depth and some good flavours, but that rubber just knocks it back.

Cask @ Bon Accord. Clear dark golden colour, off-white head. Nose is light malted, citric, bit sweet. Flavour is malty, fruity, sweet, medium bodied. Ok stuff.

The Anchor, Burbage. Orange amber, white slick. Soft, slightly mineral hay and marmalade aroma. Actually fairly juicy with slight dried apricot fruits, melon, honeyed rich tea biscuit and a corn finish. I don’t know what part of dog’s anatomy this is, but it’s certainly not the bollocks.

Draught @ Hobgoblin, London:
Had this one a while ago. Great name!
A good yellow (hint of orange) colored beer with a small off white lacing.
Smell is fruity, sweets, hints of malts, hops and dough.
Taste is pretty good (had a curry when drinking this): fruity, fresh, slight bitter but ok balanced with the sweet fruitiness and malts.
Bit dry and bitter, but still fruity, in the end.

Cask conditioned handpull at The Bell, Worcester. Copper colour, thin lasting beige head. It’s a slightly sweet ESB. Some biscuit malt. No great hop. Sweetish and a bit too sweet. Bit of Wychwood fart yeast on aroma.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 hughie (3994) - Bedford, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - NOV 6, 2009
UPDATED: NOV 21, 2010 Cask at Wellington Arms, Bedford. Copper amber with a small white head. Sweet pear fruit aroma developing underarm malt and spicy hops. Creamy sweet malt taste with lots of fizz and slight bitterness. Easy drinking comfort beer. I was disposed to dislike it, but to be honest, it went down well. 21.11.10 Same location. Citric aroma and taste, with lemon meringue sweetness. Didn’t much like it this time. Rating:5,3,5,3,10:2.6

Nice golden tan coloured body with a copper glow and a thinnish white head. Aroma of fresh hops, a light malt and a bit of caramel. Nice mild malty flavour with a twang of citrus and caramel, tucked into a subtle hop flavour - all with a touch of alcohol. Aftertaste shows a mild maltiness with some sweetness at the end. Overall, a good beer - fairly light, but showing nicely! I sampled this beer on draught at Exmouth Arms in North London, England on 29-November-2008.
