Cask pint in Carre Arms, Sleaford. Not quite sure what has gone wrong with Hobgoblin. The beer that got me started with craft brews, and used to be one of my favourite bottled ales always disappoints on tap. Metallic aroma, thin and watery appearance . Watery mouth feel, metallic and astringent taste with little discernible hoppiness. Struggled to finish the pint. Meh.

Mini Cask from Tesco, Gateshead. Dark copper coloured with red fruit, malt, chocolate and burnt toffee flavours followed by a roasted, nutty and warming fruity finish. It also has fruity currants and a creamy smooth mouthfeel to the finish.

The cask was on good form, but strangely it was not much of an improvement over the bottled version. Very rare for a British beer where the two forms are usually like night and day. I havenít had much if any Marstonís cask beer in the last several years, so maybe it has to do with the cask doctoring that people in CAMRA complain accuse the big nationals of doing? Cask breathers or pellet capsule conditioning or something like that? Or maybe itís just the massive drop in gravity? Iím sure this was better last time I had it (back in 2004 ish). Still not terrible by any stretch. The brown ale flavours come through nicely. Was served too cold at the Museum Tavern - to be fair the casky character did improve slightly as it warmed. But there is a certain blandness. The hops lacked strength, and the malt lacked strength and complexity for a beer this dark.

Cask at Beefeater in Portsmouth - too light of a beer for my tastes, but has good roasted complexity

On cask at Last Post, Longton. Canít believe Iíve not rated this before, itís everywhere! Pours red brown with off white head. Malty bitter with a light spice and hop finish. In good condition itís quite nice so a bit of a fall back beer in Marstons pubs.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A classic English bitter which comes across with big toffee and nutty notes. Light and thin in mouthfeel, goes down very easily, with enough a faint hop presence to keep things ticking along.
