Had this beer on 11/6/2002. Aroma is a light roasted scent. Color is deep amber with good carbonation and a thin head. Taste is sharp and bitter. Starting with a thin body it goes down sharp with a slightly rich feel. Finish is a harsh malt flavor followed up by a bitter end. Overall it’s just too harsh. It’s got enough rich flavor for an Octoberfest but it comes on in a rough and unfriendly way. Not a beer I would buy again.

Bottle: I’m a bit of a sucker for anything with a name like ’Hobgoblin’ that sports Terry Pratchett style artwork on the bottle. Ah well...
Slightly opaque biscuity brown and revealing a surprisingly fresh aroma of dried fruits and dark caramels. This carries through in the mouth but in an overly restrained way that leaves one wanting for flavour. Bready caramels, dry plums and sultanas sit beneath a mild hop ceiling, but I want more somehow. It’s not really that it’s lacking, just that it fells like it ought to address the palate with more authority. Still, this is a lovely drop for a British ale bottled in clear glass.

I really enjoyed this beer. It had a dark amber body, and the flavor was very sweet.

12 oz bottle-pours a foamy light tan head and dark copper color. Aroma is medium malt-caramel, fruit, slight sharpness, musty. Taste is medium malt-caramel, secondary earthy/metallic hops, musty. OK/mild carbonation.

Bottle, october 07. Clear, brownish deep copper color with a medium beige head. Toffee roasted and dried fruits aroma. Restrained. Nutty, dried fruits flavor some butterscotch too. Medium to light mouthfeel, a tad watery and short. Overcarbed. Mediocre, bland brown ale.

Bottle, pours a bubbly, brown body with red hue along with a off-white head. Head dissapates rather quickly. Sweet, fruity aroma with some malt. Nice heavy body for this style. A litlle fizzy on the palate, but finishes clean. Flavors are somewhat subtle with caramel and slight coffee flavors along with some dry banana and metallic hints. Finish has a slight bitterness to it, but is crisp.

Nov. 22, 2007; 22 oz. bottle. Dark in color. Sweet aroma/flavor of malt & overripe dark fruit & caramel. Somewhat metallic bitterness comes in late to dominates the palate/finish. It’s not Fullers, but it’s a good ESB I’d be happy to encounter again.
