50cl bb03/2017 (BL2). Clear ruby-copper, off-white thick soapy head. Smells of caramelised beets, old rose petals in their broth, vegetable soup. Flavour splits down the middle of those aromas: sweetish caramels with a metallic vegetal hint and a green-vegetal hop bitterness, then thin chocolate powder (Nesquick in water instead of milk), slowly gaining character near the coda, gaining earthy accents of tobacco, dry maple syrup, forest mulch. Corn sweet and slick in mouthfeel, retronasal banana.

Served in a snifter. Pours clean deep ruby-brown with a dissipating head. Aroma of roasted malts, licorice and some bread. The taste is a lovely combination of roasted malts, licorice, a hint of chocolate. Nicely balanced beer with a short slightly bitter finish. Medium smooth body with medium carbonation. Will have it again and again and again!

I expected more from this beer and was disappointed as I am an ale lover. Middle of the road at a premium price.

Dark reddish brown ale, slightly sour flavour and aroma, flavours of bonfire toffee, caramel, burnt toast. For me it has more about it than the cask variation which i find bland. Dry finish and quite strong on the alcohol front.

Poured from a bottle. Pours a deep caramel reddish brown with a thin tan head. Light carbonation with some lacing. Aroma is faint with notes of toffee, caramel and a hint of roasted malts. Very thin body. Not much flavor. Leaves a dry, woody, powdery aftertaste on the roof of the mouth. Nothing like I expected. Disappointing. Not bad, just Blah!

The beer has a very nice look. The beer pours a decent amount of foam. The color of the foam is a dark almond brown. The color of the beer itself is reddish brown on the naked eye; when seen with a bright light the beer had a beautiful deep ruby red color. The beer is very clear. You can see some bubbles rise to the top, but not that much. The beer is to dark. The smell of the beer is not very strong. The smell has a very nice bitternes. It also has a little sour touch. It reminds me of licorice and maybe some wild yeasts. The bitterness and soreness give the beer a robust touch, a little midieval maybe. This is quite nice and fits the name of the beer perfectly. The taste of the beer is even more bitter. It has the same licorice aspect. The soreness in the taste is a bit less strong than in the smell. This isn’t a problem though. There is a tiny tiny little flavor of roasted barley in the distance. The palate of the beer is good. At first it looks a bit watery, but the finish is filled with a huge amount of gas bubbles. All in all, a good and tasty beer, and quite unique for Dutch standards.

Smokey-Ness to the beer which gives it a smooth taste, appearance doesn’t look to great like something has gone off but taste makes up for it
