djd07 (721), Houston, Texas, USA Jul 12, 2007 500 mL bottle. Poured a dark ruby color with a small off white head. The aroma is a strong malt with hints of toffee. The taste was a watery caramel with a dry finish. Decent lacing on this one but not too much to offer in the taste. NCsparkster (12), High Point, North Carolina, USA Jul 12, 2007 Dark, reddish brown hue that is free of yeast and carbonation when held up to the light. Head is a light tan that mostly disappears, but leaves some lace. Nose is mildly sweet and citrusy with nut and chocolate notes in the background. Body is medium and creamy with what’s left of the head. There is a decent amount of carbonation but only when stirred up in the mouth first. The taste is about like the nose: beginning with a mild citrus sweetness, moving to a moderate grainy/earthy nuttiness, and ending with a mild bitterness. The aftertaste sees a moderate continuation of the earthy flavors with a bit of bitterness. Maybe it’s just me, but this came across as sort of a Samuel Smith’s Imperial Stout Jr. when I first tasted it. In comparison to that, Hobgoblin has the same flavor but is toned down and much easier to drink. I’ll admit that, at any given time, I’d rather have Smith’s than this, but there are plenty of times when I’m just looking for a mild/moderate tasty beer to relax with, and this’ll fit the bill quite well for that. joohefner (380), Isla Vista, California, USA Jul 11, 2007 brown ruby with small tan head. roasted earth aroma with some molasses and very light coffee. thin body with crisp medium carbonation. tastes of nutty earth with a slight citrus acidity to it biggenius29 (155), Hamilton, Michigan, USA Jul 11, 2007 Bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a redish brown with a average size creamy white head that is mostly lasting along with good lacing. The aroma is of roasted and nutty malts along with some molasses. The flavor is of Roasted and nutty malts with a slight grainy taste along with some molasses. There is also hints of banana with a hint of licorice. The body is light to medium with a watery texture and lively carbonation. aquataco (8), Texas, USA does not count Jul 9, 2007 Very nice nutty, fruity, aroma. Minimal, rapidly disappearing head. The taste does not quite live up to the aroma. Whelk (124), Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England Jul 7, 2007 Pours a deep ruby/copper red with a creamy light head. Very little aroma. Coffee and roasty notes dominate in terms of flavor, with some fruitiness and maltiness backing it up. Closer to a brown ale than an ESB in my opinion. A good session beer. charcot25 (181), Cordova, Tennessee, USA Jul 6, 2007 Pours a light brown with white head. Aroma is malty sweet without any hop notes. Tastes sweet up front but has a satisfying bitterness to back it up. Subdued fruit. Some toasty, chocolate notes as well. Tastes more like a good brown ale to me. sinkas (182), Perth/Fremantle, Australia Jul 6, 2007 Can, Janadakot Liquor, Perth, WA
Pours a murky, brown clour with copper tones
Aroma is of light sweet malts, suprising considering the darkness of the colour.
Flavour is sweet, smooth, a little metallic at the front. Better than I remeber last time.
BB date removed, so likely OOD
