Moz (613), Gothenburg, Sweden Apr 9, 2007 Bottle. Dark amber colour with an off-white head. Aroma of bread, toffee & hops. Fruity, light hoppy flavour. Quite nice. bu11zeye (5430), Frisco, Texas, USA Apr 8, 2007 (Bottle) Pours a clear amber body with a small off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, candy, and dark fruit. Flavor of dark fruits, mild hops, and malt. wilderthanyou (409), Guelph, Ontario, Canada Apr 7, 2007 Updated: Oct 28, 2007Pours a dark amber red with no head. The aroma is dried fruit, with notes of apricot, most noticable during the pour. The flavor is again, of some dried fruits, and strong hops, I felt the malts were a little too subtle, but maybe thats just me. The palat is not bad, nothing special, but nothing to complain about, carbonation i guess is a little strong, but thats about it. All and all a decent beer. rw4244 (128), Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Apr 4, 2007 Bottle 50cl. Poured a deep dark reddy brown, with a blooming off-white head. Pungent aroma of malts and roasted nuts, with hints of raisin. The flavour is rich and nutty, finishing with a slightly sour bitterness. Thick, robust palate. Tasty complex ale. b33r (363), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Apr 1, 2007 Aged 3-4 years (not sure of date, found in parents’ fridge drawer, no date, but has old label). Medium nut brown / amber color with small diminishing off-white head. Huge fruity, malty, bubblegum aroma burst from bottle when opened, but slightly died down after a bit. Nice fruit and malt aroma and flavor with clean, quick finish- very light. Chantdaddy (19), New Jersey, USA Mar 30, 2007 I’ve had a lot of beers... and this is easily one of my favorites... if not my absolute favorite.
Depth of caramel, malt, and roast flavors clearly shows that the brewers know just what they’re doing. English hops balance the brew just enough so that the perceived maltiness/sweetness doesn’t get out of hand. People often confuse "mild" with "properly balanced"... many beers these days strive to showcase one ingredient (or a small group of ingredients), and it is much easier for the brewmaster to do so... It takes more thought and skill to consistently brew a beer that is so easy to drink, yet so well weaved that all of the individual ingredients become a whole...
As is commonly said about this brew, it’s dangerously drinkable, and you almost forget that it’s a strong ale... I’ve found myself (quite a few times) forgetting that this isn’t a session ale... heh heh. I love it’s deep, almost garnet, hue.
The current rating of this ale doesn’t really represent it’s quality... a must for anyone who enjoys a good English ale now and then.
