Hobgoblin is a powerful full-bodied copper red, well-balanced brew. Strong in roasted malt with a moderate hoppy bitterness and slight fruity character that lasts through to the end.

Dreadful branding and bottle design. But it’s ubiquitous and I think this is because shopkeeper’s think that real ale drinkers and goblins are a good match and maybe even the same thing. I once got hammered on this stuff with the builder that lived next door, and to this day I’ve never had it since. Anyway - aroma is dark and leathery malt, book lined shelves. Taste a little thin at first and the rich and quite satisfying - good balance of bitter and sweet. Finish not bad. Marked down for appearance as the head quickly dissipates and you are just looking at a dark flat liquid in a glass. Overall - not bad. Not exactly complex. There are better beers of the type but I won’t look down my nose at it any more.

Rated based on notes taken 4 Sep 2011 -- This is a brew I enjoyed fresh very much. Nice bready, malty flavor. Taste some chocolate malt as well. Will drink again for sure.

Bottle 330ml. Clear light brownish-amber with no head. Aroma of cherry, sweetish malt, herbs. Sweet-bitter flavor, hoppy bitterness, cherry, toffee, notes of raisin, malty, a bit sour. Dry, light carbonation. Light body. Sweet-bitter aftertaste.

Easy going ESB for the masses, can be found in most Dutch supermarkets. The label is nice, but the beer is a bit too average. Malty, mildly hoppy and a bit muddy.

Bottle from Tesco Windy Nook. Pours deep reddy brown. Flavour of liquorice, malt, chestnut - quite enjoyable but a touch flat by the end

Bought in 500ml bottles. For me it’s very full-bodied, which is not what I usually enjoy, but found this one to be pleasant.

50cl bottle. Lovely reddish brown colour, with a light medium sized head which dissipates quickly. Coffee on the nose, and some carbonation. Sweet fruits, some bitterness - nice roasted malt and chocolate.

On tap at Dan's. The pour is a ruby color with no head and no lace to be found. The aroma is really sweet. Caramel malts and not a whole lot. I'm not really picking anything else up. The flavor is equally as disappointing. There is just not a lot happening. No real bitter. The mouthfeel is thin and slick. Real light carbonation. The aftertaste is lightly sweet and kind of bland. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
