Dreadful branding and bottle design. But it’s ubiquitous and I think this is because shopkeeper’s think that real ale drinkers and goblins are a good match and maybe even the same thing. I once got hammered on this stuff with the builder that lived next door, and to this day I’ve never had it since. Anyway - aroma is dark and leathery malt, book lined shelves. Taste a little thin at first and the rich and quite satisfying - good balance of bitter and sweet. Finish not bad. Marked down for appearance as the head quickly dissipates and you are just looking at a dark flat liquid in a glass. Overall - not bad. Not exactly complex. There are better beers of the type but I won’t look down my nose at it any more.

Bottle at home, 24/11/15. Rich chestnut brown with a decent beige covering. Nose is overly sweet, vanilla, marzipan, toffee, sweet dark fruit notes. Taste comprises biscuit malt, toffee, raisen, dark fruit, light cocoa. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok if a touch overly sweet, needs to be beefed up on the bitterness front.

Darkish brown, with an illuminating purple/tan hue. Frothy, off-white lasts for days. Hint of cardboard, oxidation, rich pale malt, prunes/raisins, dark grapes, bready, light toffee, honey on toast, beautiful blend of malty sweetness complexity. English type overly roasted caramel malts are subdued. Big notes of chewy, candy caramel up front. CO2 is moderately high takes over, may be more perceived with oxidation present. Finishes with a fast transition to a pungent prune fruit explosion, before the taste quickly fades into a remotely dry finish. CO2 scrubs out a lot of the malt flavor, making for easier drinking. As it warms up, picking up a big fruity ester character (shampoo) with burnt caramel (golden grahams cereal)...yummy. Picking up a distinctive pear-like aroma after the "mild" malt presence tides down.

Reddish brown pour with a thick off-white head. Malty, toffee and some red fruit flavour. Slightly sweet, slightly bitter, comes through a little dry at the end

500ml into a nonic pint glass. Key to this is to have it around 10 degrees celsius or you won’t get the full flavour. Deep reddish brown colour with an off white (tan?) head. Head retention is good with consistent lacing. Malts, caramel, chocolate all coming through at different times. Mild carbonation, but sufficient and medium bodied. Smell a lot of caramel malts and no hint of hops on the nose despite the label saying otherwise. I do like this, but a bit expensive compared to some other brands of similar quality. Still great to have on a cold night whilst watching an English murder mystery.

Bottle. A malty red with mild bitter taste. Slight aroma of malt but not much else. Goes down easy, but is not very distinct.

Pours a nice ruby red brown. A nice malty flavour which goes down smooth. Little but of hop in the middle.
